Stocked in curly maple, stained to a warm brown, this iron trimmed flint longrifle is made in the Virginia style. The iron buttplate is wide and flat to best spread the recoil over a large area. The .54 caliber swamped octagon barrel is 38" in length, finished to a dark brown. The large Siler flintlock is mated to double lever double set triggers tuned to fire set or unset. The rifle is signed on the top flat of the barrel L McCoy. The rifle is used with a heavy textured patina on the browned furniture, barrel, and lock, and many scattered handling marks on the stock from loading and cleaning. . Trigger reach is 13-1/4" to fit todays average size shooter, and the rifle weighs 7.8 pounds.

The rifle is fitted with a 38" swamped octagon .54 caliber Colerain barrel. The swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The .54 caliber bore is cut rifled with six deep round bottom grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and appears to have been well maintained. The Germanic style flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10-3/4" ahead of the breech. A nickel silver blade front sight is fitted behind the muzzle.

The maple stock is stained to a golden brown, and rubbed back to best reveal the figure. The stock has many handling marks as well as some streaks in the finish from water with black powder residue wetting the stock during cleaning. The lock, iron furniture, and barrel are all browned to dark contrasting color. All of the browning has a textured feel that gives this rifle a well used, but well maintained appearance. The buttstock is fitted with a wide flat buttplate to spread the recoil. As with many steel trimmed and browned finished guns the buttplate heel has a well worn appearance from being placed on the ground during loading and cleaning. The triggerguard has a wide open bow for the Germanic style double lever double set triggers. The triggerguard is shaped with a long offset grip rail with a curled spoon at the end. No toeplate is fitted, instead the toe of the buttplate stands just above the wood to provide a small amount of protection. An entry pipe with long skirt, and two forward pipes mount the 3/8" ramrod. The ramrod has a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The iron sideplate is inlet flush with the side panel and secured with two domed head lock bolts. This is a hand finished piece of workmanship. The brown finish shows some wear from firing and cleaning. The bore is bright and it appears to have been well maintained.

Sure-fire ignition is provided by this large Siler flint lock. The powerful mainspring is set to deliver lots of sparks directly into the pan. Finished to a textured brown, the lock plate has a hand forged appearance and a non-glare surface finish. We recommend a #FLINT-ENG-6 3/4" knapped English flint for this lock. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

The double lever double set triggers have a long Germanic style rear trigger. These set triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. You can set the triggers with the cock in any position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

We recommend simple and attractive Virginia rifle the French & Indian War era reenactor or the Revolutionary War volunteer, seeking a suitable gun for militia duty.
