This .45 caliber Thompson Center Hawken percussion rifle is ready to shoot. This rifle is stocked in a very fancy piece of American black walnut, with iron furniture, and a browned 32" Green Mountain barrel. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The stock and furniture have scattered handling marks from use. Weight is 9.3 pounds, and with a trigger reach of 13-7/8 inches, the rifle is perfectly setup for today's average man size shooter.

The Green Mountain barrel is .45 caliber, 15/16" octagon, 32" length. The bore is cut rifled with a 1 in 60" rate of twist to shoot a patched round ball. We recommend our .440" round ball, .015" patch, and Mink Oil tallow patch lubricant, over a charge of 70 grains of GOEX FFg black powder. The factory blue finish has been removed and the factory marking on the upper flats have been draw filed smooth and the barrel has been browned to a matte tone. A brass blade front sight is fitted and a semi-buckhorn rear sight has been dovetailed 6-1/2" ahead of the breech. One of the original adjustable rear sight mounting screw holes is visible just behind the rear sight and has been filled with a screw and filed flush with the top flat.

The rifle is stocked in very fancy piece of black walnut and the factory brass furniture has been replaced with iron trim with the exception of the capbox. The wood has small handling marks associated with normal use and disassembly for cleaning. The heel of the buttplate shows some wear from being placed on the ground during loading and cleaning. The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlug, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by a oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle. The 3/8" wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass tip to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories.

The color case hardened percussion lock has started to age to a dark brown patina and has a few vertical scuff marks across the front of the lock plate . The breech is fitted with a 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple. Double lever double set triggers are well adjusted, to fire set or unset. When the rear trigger is set (latched), the front trigger has a hair-trigger release, perhaps 2 or 3 ounces. The adjustment screw between the triggers allows even finer or coarser adjustment, as desired. Or, turn the screw fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold weather.

Attractively priced, this Thompson Center Hawken Rifle is in excellent condition with a bright clean bore. Fitted with browned iron furniture and primitive sights for a plans rifle appearance.
