This attractive South Mountain .54 caliber longrifle is trimmed in iron, and stocked in walnut. Often referred to as a Tennessee style, this Southern rifle is fitted with a correct English Durs Egg flint lock, by L&R. Antique Tennessee flint rifles were often equipped with imported English locks. Signed by contemporary builder George Nelson. Trigger reach is 13-3/4", to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 9 pounds. The rifle balances nicely in your hands, at the rear ramrod pipe.

Ready to shoot, the 42" long 15/16" octagon .54 caliber cut rifled Green Mountain rifle barrel, points easily without being overly heavy. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The maker's name G. B. Nelson is engraved in bold script, on the top flat of the browned barrel.

The walnut stock is trimmed in browned iron furniture with a crescent steel buttplate and triggerguard with a hand forged profile. The stock has a slender attractive shape and the forearm is shaped with the angluar panels found on rifles from that region. Our top view shows the long lollipop tang of the breech plug. Two tang bolts, are neatly fitted with slots aligned with the barrel. The rich chocolate brown color of the barrel, lock, and iron hardware is smooth and well finished.

The bottom view reveals the long iron toeplate. The toeplate is retained with two iron screws, fire blued, with slots aligned. The toe plate is well fitted, with a very simple Tennessee style finial at front. The slender iron hand forged style Tennessee style triggerguard is retained by screws in traditional regional fashion. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 female threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The diamond shaped sideplate is retained by a single fire blued lock bolt. The steel sideplate is mounted flush, and finished to a silvery gray. The square cheek piece gives the shooter a comfortable rest while aligning the sights.

This rifle is fitted with a L&R Durs Egg flintlock. Perhaps London's most innovative lock and gun maker, Mr. Durs Egg immigrated from Switzerland, setting up shop in London, the world's arms making center in his time. Cock jaws direct sparks into the semi-waterproof pan with rain gutters. The fancy frizzen pan cover flange seals the pan. The fancy “frictionless" tumbler and sear have raised bearing rings turned around screw holes, preventing moving parts from rubbing the plate or bridle. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock.

The double lever double set trigger is properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to for firmer pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

A stainless steel vent liner is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

Neatly stocked in walnut and trimmed in iron furniture. This longrifle is new, unfired. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
