Originally designed as a Model 1867 military pistol by Remington they also cataloged a target version in smaller rimfire caliber, the Model 1901. This model differs from the earlier 1867 Model with the addition of a spur at the top of the grip, and the trigger and triggerguard were moved forward to reduce the size. The longer octagon-to-round barrel is also fitted with a bead front sight and adjustable rear sight on the top of the action. By the time they were sold, much more advanced handguns were available, but the reliable and simple rolling block mechanism was still very well adapted to target shooting and marksmanship practice. The bore on this pistol has been relined and is in bright well maintained condition. The barrel and action have been polished and refinished to a dark blue. The walnut forend and grip have a high gloss finish applied. The late production and caliber qualifies this pistol for FFL transfer and can be picked up by a Minnesota resident, or it must be shipped to a FFL dealer in another state.this pistol to qualify as an FFL

The 10" octagon-to-round barrel is marked Remington Arms Co. Illion NY U.S.A. on the top behind the front sight. The barrel has been refinished and the markings on the top appear lightened slightly. The markings on the bottom of the barrel just ahead of the transition from octagon, are no longer legible. The .22 caliber re-lined bore is chambered for the .22 long rifle cartridge. A bead front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The bead on the front sight appears to be very slightly tipped to the right hand side when viewed on end. Some referances note the sight should have an ivory bead, which is not present. The rear sight on the top of the action has small screw adjustments for windage and elevation

The action has been heavily polished and then blued. The polishing has lightened the P and S markings as well as the patent markings on the upper edge of the action, which read Remington's Illion N.Y. U.S.A. Pat May 3d, Nov 16th 1864 April 17th 1866. The breech block and hammer have been polished and refinished to a dark blue. The walnut grip and forearm have been refinished with a high gloss finish applied. The checkering on the grip appears recut with a "W" design on the upper edge rather than the typical "V" design encountered on these pistols. The bottom of the grip has a few dents, dings, and scuff marks.
