This lovely Ballard rifle was manufactured by Ballard Rifle Co. LLC, Cody, Wyoming. Stocked in a figured piece of checkered black walnut, Schuetzen style buttplate, and removable palm rest for off hand shooting. This large caliber rifle has a heavy octagon-to-round barrel making it ideal for off hand shooting. The rifle is fitted with a Montana Vintage Arms spirit level front sight and long range Vernier tang sight. The barrel also has blocks to mount a scope. The rifle appears to have seen little use with few handling marks or evidence of wear. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" and this rifle weighs 12.4 pounds. This rifle has the "take down" action, and includes a Cape Outfitters case, as well as the original build sheet.

The 32" half octagon heavy barrel is chambered for .45-70 Government cartridge. This well fitted barrel has been polished and finished to a dark blue. The black walnut forearm is shaped with a ebony tip. The tang is fitted with a fine quality Montana Vintage Arms Vernier tang sight with 3-1/2" of elevation as well as windage adjustments. No rear sight has ever been installed in the barrel, a good choice when using the tang sight at closer ranges, however the rifle does have sight blocks fitted. The spirit level front sight is also by M.V.A. and requires apertures that are fitted from above and secured with the clip on the spirit level. The globe front sight has a cross hair with aperture fitted currently

Stocked in fancy black walnut with a checkered grip, this rifle is fitted with a steel color case hardened buttplate, which should snugly engage the shoulder and help spread the felt recoil over a large area. This stock is well finished with a satin sheen. The stock and action are well fitted, and the black walnut stock nicely contrasts the color case hardened Ballard action. The mottled colors of the color case hardened action and iron furniture are a pleasure to hold and admire. A large oval cheek rest is shaped for a right hand shooter. Not highly decorated, this Ballard Rifle is an artistic creation, and the beauty is in the fit, finish, and workmanship of this graceful recreation of an American classic single shot rifle. The color case hardened action is fitted with a double lever double set trigger, tuned to fire set or unset for a smooth light release. The side of the action is marked Ballard Rifle and Cartridge Co. LLC Cody, Wyoming USA, Ballard's Pat. Nov. 5 1861.
