Track's pre-carved stocks are properly cured, and stable,
with only 6% to 8% moisture content!

Never stock your rifle with cheap wood. Stocking a rifle with cheap wood can be discouraging! If your wood cracks, checks, or splits after you begin work, your labor may be lost. Cheap "green" wood from the lumber yard is no bargain.

Our wood experts properly cut and cure each stock, to minimize your risk. Our wood was selected for gun stocks, often before the tree was cut. Our stock blanks are not "lumber yard culls". The stock blanks we offer are slow cured to the ideal 6 to 8% moisture content in a special kiln, and often have been in climate controlled storage for three to five years. We keep a large supply on hand.

Please note, not all pre-carved stocks are offered in all grades of wood.

Pre-carved and shaped stocks are priced by the amount and type of figure, as follows:

Curly maple is offered in grades 1, 2, and 3, and sometimes in grade 4 when available.

Grade 1 Maple (M1) may have some curl, but basically straight grain. Nearly all curly maple has some figure, but we will select a truly straight grain stock, if you request it.
Grade 2 Maple (M2) may have some curl over 30% or more of its length. Perhaps the best value, grade 2 maple makes an attractive stock. Not often catalogued, this is the grade most often demanded by serious gun makers, since it offers the best compromise of gool price, attractive figure, and modest stress.
Grade 3 Maple (M3) has nice curl over 50% of its length. Very nice, this maple may have more internal stress. It may be slower to carve and inlet. Fancy figured stocks are more costly not only because of the wood cost, but also because of they must be carved more slowly and more carefully.
Grade 4 Maple (M4) has curl over most of the stock, but can vary in width of the curl. Unusually figured stocks are scarce, and usually sold as blanks and not always available. Place your order in advance of your needs. If you require immediate delivery, please allow us to substitute M3, or specify a second choice.

American black walnut stocks are offered in three grades:

Grade 1 Walnut (W1) has nearly straight grain, with little or no curl or burl.
Grade 2 Walnut (W2) has a small amount of curl or burl in the butt.
Grade 3 Walnut (W3) has a better amount flame curl or burl in the butt.

Grade 1 Cherry (C1) has nearly straight grain, with little or no figure, clear nice wood, free of knots and flaws.

All wood contains internal stress. Figured wood is more highly stressed than straight grain wood. Every piece of wood may have hidden chips, checks, cracks, knots, bark inclusions, rot, cross grain, worm holes, warping, or incorrect dimensions. These become your problems only after you decide to cut the wood. Old time gunsmiths faced and solved such hidden problems. Many antique longrifles will reveal clever repairs, inlays, and "wear plates" to cover hidden flaws and errors.

Examine any stock for 10 days. If not delighted, perhaps we can substitute a different grade, select another piece, or suggest a simple solution. If we can't satisfy you, we will promptly refund the price of the stock. Order wood by mail, phone, fax, or click ADD TO CART!
