Stocked in walnut, this antique percussion sporting rifle is trimmed in engraved steel furniture. The octagon-to-round barrel does not have any visible signature or proof marks. The English style bar lock is also unmarked, and is notably missing the hammer. The stock has a visible repair across the toe. The rifle is missing: the ramrod, rear sight riser. hammer, and initial plate.

The barrel is 31" long, including the English style breech plug. The barrel is 1.2" at the breech, tapering to .98" at the muzzle. The barrel and rib have aged to a dark brown patina. The .38 caliber bore is rifled with a very fast twist with shallow grooves, and was appears to have been designed for a conical lead bullet. The bore has scattered dark spots visible over the length. We do note some vise or wrench marks on the octagon breech end of the barrel. The barrel is fitted with a step adjustable rear sight, missing the riser. The front sight is a steel dovetail with a extremely fine front blade. The tang is fitted with a sporting tang sight with a dovetail base that extends across the tang. The dovetail base covers some engraving, so it must have been added after the tang was finished, or at a later point in the service life of the rifle. The rib has some white paint on the left hand side just ahead of the forearm and is penned "Rom RR 21"

Stocked in checkered walnut, the stock has a rich reddish brown color, and currently has a very matte finish. The wrist is neatly checkered, and has worn slightly from age and use. The stock has been broken across the toe and glued, the repair is clearly visible and has a filled screw hole on the bottom to tie the two pieces together. The crack extends into the missing initial plate on the toe, which is likely why it is missing.

This top view shows the English style buttplate and stock architecture. The stock has shrunk and the tip of the buttplate comb now sits slightly higher than the stock. Notice how the lock panels taper widest to the front, a architectural detail of this period, which helps create a slender wrist. The stock has a chip at the end of the tang. Fitted with a English style hooked breech with drip bar, drift the key and the barrel can be lifted out for cleaning. Shooters in the late 1800's appreciated ease of maintenance as much as we do today. The single key is captured to prevent loss in the field.

The forend is fitted with a poured pewter forend cap. The ramrod pipes are a classic late English design with raised rings on the ends. The front ramrod pipe appears to have been re-soldered. The ramrod is missing. The triggerguard is attractively engraved and has aged to a gray brown patina. The side panel is fitted with a single lock bolt with a washer style sideplate.

The English bar lock is engraved with a swirls and scrolls but is otherwise unmarked. The hammer is missing and a portion of the tumbler shank is broken away. We did not cock the lock to test function. A drip bar is attached to the barrel, just ahead of the breech plug. This late percussion feature replaced the fragile wood that would otherwise char and fracture from repeated cap flash. The nipple appears to be old, but has been reshaped and is bright. The flash channel screw on the breech has a damaged slot. This rifle is fitted with a single trigger.

A late percussion English style sporting rifle from the late 1800's with interesting tang sight. Unsigned this rifle does not have any visible proof marks indicating the origin of the rifle.
