This antique Jaeger rifle has a fullstock, percussion back action lock, double set triggers, engraved iron trim, and swamped barrel. A forward sling swivel and rear sling button were part of the original design, but have since been removed. The stock has a visible repair to the wrist, and a 4-1/2" section is missing just behind the muzzle cap. The bore is mostly bright and this antique appears to be shootable. Unsigned, this antique rifle likely dates from the last part of the 19th century. Trigger reach is long for an antique at 14", and the weight is 7.9 pounds.

The barrel has a gentle swamped profile. The barrel is 30-3/4" excluding the breech plug. The .52 caliber bore measures .525" land to land and is rifled with eight lands and grooves. The bore is in excellent condition for a antique, mostly bright with some light scattered pitting near the muzzle. It appears to be very shootable. The barrel is fitted with a wide flat top rear sight with a folding leaf. The front sight is a low steel blade dovetailed just behind the muzzle in Germanic fashion..

The buttstock has a high comb and the buttplate heel gently tapers to a point and has a long tapered comb. A engraved steel capbox is fitted to the buttstock. All the hand engraving is in the same style as found on the lock and other furniture. We were unable to open the capbox, likely from the wood shrinking against the door as the rifle aged. The wrist is neatly checkered for a secure grip. The wrist has a visible repair where it was glued back together long ago. The repair is visible on both sides of the stock. The triggerguard is shaped with a pistol grip, and wide bow to accept the double lever double set triggers.

The barrel is mounted with two wedge keys, both appear to be original to the rifle. The middle oval is the position where a forward swivel should be mounted, note the position so the swivel would rest on the middle ramrod pipe. A filler pin is installed in the hole. The toe of the stock has a unfilled hole for a sling button. Our #SWIVEL-7-B would be a good choice as a replacement.

The forearm has a angular profile and is shaped with a wide flat along the ramrod channel. The ramrod pipes are formed with raised rings on the ends. No mounting pins are visible and it was common for late percussion European guns to be constructed with screws from the barrel channel down into the ramrod pipe. A horn muzzle cap is fitted to protect the end grain of the stock. The ramrod is a modern replacement, but appears to be well fitted with a 10-32 threaded brass tip at front and a covered worm at the rear..

The back action lock has a rounded hammer with a deep notch at the center. The lock features a gravitating stop as an additional safety feature. The stop prevents the hammer from striking the nipple, rotate the stop fully forward to allow the hammer to fully travel and strike the nipple. Both the lock plate and hammer are engraved with decorative scrolls matching the designs on the other furniture. The lock is mounted with two lock bolts. Both bolts are supported with fancy steel side plates. T

The stock has normal handling marks, dents and dings from a rifle 100+ years of age. The wrist has a glued repair, an the forend has a cosmetic chip missing. The bore is in excellent condition for a antique with some light scattered pitting near the muzzle. A interesting late percussion European sporting arm. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
