This original antique English halfstock fowling gun dates from the percussion period, perhaps 1850 to 1860's. The walnut half stock has a number of cracks as well as some missing wood. The 24 gauge octagon-to-round barrel has a rough dark bore, and the nipple is broken off in the breech plug. This old fowler would best be used for display, or to model a replica from.

The barrel is marked Johnstone Birmingham on the upper flat ahead of the breech. The barrel has aged to a dark brown and the Damascus pattern is faintly visible over the length of the barrel. The barrel has numerous handling marks accumulated from many decades of age and use. The bore is rough and dark.

This antique gun has attractive lines with a classic iron fowler triggerguard. The buttstock ends in a wide, flat, comfortable iron buttplate. A single iron wedge keys mount the barrel to the stock. The tang of the hooked breech has a visible welded repair just ahead of the upper tang bolt.

The bottom view shows the rounded toe and wide flat buttplate at the butt end. No toeplate is used on fowling guns. The iron triggerplate is English style, with a pineapple finial at front. Hand engraved, the engraving has become a bit worn over the years, from regular use. A single lock bolt is fitted to a diamond shaped iron escutcheon inlay, inlet flush into the side panel. A crack extends from the lock bolt to the breech of the barrel.

The percussion lock is unmarked as to a maker, but does have an engraved border and scroll designs on the plate and hammer. The lock has a loose hammer and can be fired from the half cock position. The nipple is broken off in the hooked breech, likely from being dry fired repeatedly.

Due to the condition of this piece it would best be used as a wall hanger display piece, or as a model to build a replica.
