This antique Appalachian Mountain rifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in a mixture of brass and iron furniture. The wrist has been repaired with symmetrical brass plates. This rifle has an original Goulcher percussion lock and set triggers. The stock and barrel show well over 100 years of use with many dings, scratches, and cracks. This rifle has a great overall patina typical of antique rifles. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" and this rifle weighs 8.5 pounds.

The .42 caliber barrel is 42" in overall length. The swamped octagon barrel measures .92" at the breech, .86" at the midway point, and .92" at the muzzle. The bore is rifled with seven narrow grooves and wide lands. It measures .422" from land to land, but the muzzle appears to be heavily coned. The bore is dark with pits and could benefit from a good scrubbing. The barrel has developed a dark brown patina finish. There are many dings in the barrel and the breech end is pitted from the corrosive effects of early percussion caps. A very low silver blade front sight set in a brass base is dovetailed 1-3/4" behind the muzzle. A semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 12-1/2" ahead of the breech. We note that the right buckhorn on the sight is broken off.

The hand scraped maple stock has many dings and scratches from a century of use. There is a drying crack starting at the front of the triggerguard followed by another further up on the forearm. There is a large repaired crack that starts in the wrist and runs up through the comb of the buttstock just ahead of the cheekpiece. The crack has been reinforced with brass plates that sandwich the wrist. Ten steel screws retain each of the brass plates. The period repair was neatly done and the brass has developed a great patina from being handled over the years.

The top view shows the straight tang that is rounded on the end. A single tang bolt engages the trigger plate below. The symmetrical brass repair plates can be seen sandwiching the wrist and comb of the stock. The forged buttplate is sheet iron joined at the heel. The buttplate is retained with two steel screws, and it is also riveted to the toeplate. The thin sheet iron toeplate is retained with two steel screws. There is an incised line carved in the center of the toe of the stock from the toeplate to the triggerguard. The iron triggerguard has a curled grip rail and is retained to the stock with two steel screws. The buttplate, toeplate, and triggerguard have the same brown patina as the barrel.

The forearm is fitted with a skirt less brass ramrod entry pipe. The two forward ramrod pipes are formed from brass and are mismatched. The one nearest the muzzle is rounded and matches the entry pipe. The other ramrod pipe is octagon with rings on each end. The ramrod fitted to this rifle has a integral wood cleaning slot carved into the end that slides into the stock. The ramrod extends past the muzzle by 1/4". The simple muzzle cap is formed from brass sheet stock wrapped around the forearm and riveted to the stock. There is no end cap and the end grain of the forearm is exposed and has been burnished hard from years of use. There is chip in the wood under the cap on the left side.

This rifle has a Goulcher percussion lock. The Goulcher family were prolific lock makers, and must have made thousands of locks, they are commonly seen on percussion longrifles. The lock has aged to the same brown patina as the barrel. The lock plate has an engraved border, with die embossed bird scene on the tail and Goulcher name below the bolster of the breech. The percussion drum is fitted with an antique nipple. The tumbler has a half cock-notch, but it is worn, allowing it to "go off at half-cock." A single domed head lock bolt secures the lock through a washer style sideplate.

The triggers are single lever double set, a popular mid 19th century design. Only the rear trigger has a trigger bar to engage the sear on the lock. This design means that the triggers will only fire the lock from the set position. Pull the rear trigger until it latches. Once set the front trigger only requires a few ounces of pressure to fire the lock for a accurate aimed shot. This trigger does not have the backlash correctly adjusted, requiring the triggers to be set before the lock can be cocked.
