This antique double barrel percussion rifle is stocked in walnut and trimmed in iron furniture. The barrel and back action locks have aged to a silvery gray brown patina. The stock has a visible repair between the tang and the left lock on the upper left lock panel. The stock has many dings and handling marks typical of firearms that have been handled for 100+ years. Trigger reach is 14-1/4" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 12.7 pounds.

The .40 caliber 33" long barrels have a .398" bore diameter when measured land to land. The rifled bores are mostly bright, but do have pitting throughout the length of the barrels, especially in the grooves and could benefit from a good scrubbing. The right barrel has a spot near the breech that tends to grab cleaning patches when run through the barrel. The barrel rib is raised near the breech from the soldering letting loose over the years. A low brass bade set in an iron base is dovetailed 1" behind the muzzle. The rear sight is adjustable for elevation and sits 6" ahead of the breech. We note that the elevation screw is worn and does not provide enough tension to keep the sight in place, allowing it to rotate on its front mounting rivet from side to side across the barrel rib.

The walnut stock has been varnished to a dark brown and shows many dings and scratches from over a century of handling and use. The stock has a repaired chip/crack midway between the upper portion of the tang to just behind the hammer on the left side of the back action lock. A dark brown filler was used to replace some missing wood at the end of the repaired crack.

A mid-19th century style crescent buttplate is fitted to the stock to securely engage the shooter's shoulder. An iron capbox is inlet into the right side of the buttstock. The long tang of the hooked breech has a hole drilled and tapped to accommodate a tang sight that is no longer fitted to the rifle. The triggerguard is screwed to the long triggerplate inlet into the stock. No cheek is carved on the stock, allowing it to be shot by a right or left handed shooter.

A single wedge key passes through nickel silver escutcheons inlet into the forearm of the stock to secure the barrel. Removing the wedge key allows the hooked breech barrels to be removed from the stock. A long skirted iron entry pipe and two iron ramrod pipes soldered to the barrel's under rib secure the steel ramrod. The end of the ramrod that slides into the stock is fitted with a ball puller, and we note the tip of the screw is broken off.

The percussion back action locks are unmarked and have the same patina as the barrels. The hammers on both locks are loose on the tumbler shanks. The hammer cup on the right hand hammer has some chipping from the effects of antique corrosive percussion caps. The spur on the right hand lock has been filed and is no longer checkered. The locks to do not have a half-cock notch and the hammers do not align at full cock. The right hand nipple is antique and is badly mushroomed from dry firing. The left hand nipple is a modern replacement. The single trigger activates the left hand lock first then the right hand lock. Trigger pull is stiff.

This side-by-side rifle shows its history. It would look great hanging above the fireplace or on the wall of the hunting cabin. It is sure to be a conversation piece!
