This antique pepperbox pistol dates from the late 1850's and was produced by the Manhattan Firearms Company, New York. The Manhattan Firearms Company was founded circa 1856 by a group of New Jersey businessmen and production was located in Norwich, Connecticut until 1859, when it was moved to Newark, New Jersey. This small pepperbox pistol has 3" barrels with an overall length of 6-1/4".

The three shot .28 caliber barrels have a nominal bore diameter of .29" at the muzzle. The fluted barrels are 3" long where they mate with the frame. All three smoothbore barrels are mostly bright with some scattered light speckling. The barrels are marked Cast Steel as well as having an assembly number of 17. The nipples appear to be antique with some light battering from repeated hammer blows.

The bar hammer is marked MANHATTEN FA MFG. CO. / NEW YORK. The engrave designs on the sides of the action have a worn appearance from handling. The action operates correctly when the hammer is pulled, it does not have a half cock position so the hammer would always be resting on a nipple. This early design requires the barrels to be manually rotated into each position, unlike some pepperbox pistols that will index with each trigger pull. Stocked in American black walnut the grip has a bag shape with a gentle arc. The walnut displays scattered handling marks. The iron grip rail is thin, with a tension screw on the front.
