This antique English pistol features an 8" swamped octagon brass barrel, walnut stock, engraved brass furniture, and percussion conversion lock. This pistol is the sort commonly found on the commercial market and used as trade pistols in the early to mid 19th century. This pistol appears to be a well made trade pistol with hand engraving on the brass furniture and very slender shaping. The stock has one small hairline crack at the muzzle extending horizontally back about 1".

The 8" brass, swamped octagon barrel is smooth bore with a .537" diameter bore. The bore is dark and has some very light pitting, but does wipe easily with a cleaning patch. Designed for person defense at short range the barrel does not have any sights fitted.

The percussion conversion lock is engraved Wilkensen along the lower edge of the plate. The markings are now very faint due to the gray brown textured patina. The conversion from flintlock left part of the pan and flash fence in place. The filled holes from the frizzen screw and frizzen spring are faintly visible. The lock functions well with a secure half cock and full cock notch.
The pistol has a slender grip that flares into the lock panels. The steel breech plug has a thumbnail design and is hand engraved with a pattern similar to Ketland Trade pistols. The 8" brass barrel has a very slight swamped profile and the top flat is engraved Bristol. Typically pistols and rifles were marked London as a mark of quality even when they were made in other major manufacturing or trade centers.

The side of the breech is stamped with post-1813 Birmingham view and proof marks and a maker's mark. The late proof marks would seem to indicate that this pistol did not see much use as a flintlock before it was converted to percussion.
The brass triggerguard has been broken and repaired along the wrist. The grip rail was cracked at the thin web around the mounting screw. The repair used brass screws on either side of the original screw to secure the grip rail to the stock. The screw heads have been neatly finished flush with the triggerguard. The triggerguard is neatly hand engraved with a pineapple design on the finial and a floral design on the triggerguard bow.

The bag style grip is neatly finished round. The wooden ramrod is original to the pistol. The ramrod is fitted with a tapered horn tip as well as a long iron tip with a forged worm on the end.
The two lock bolts are each supported with a washer style sideplate inlet flush into the side panel. The side panel has very slender shaping with the upper edge at the line created by the side and quarter flat of the barrel. The walnut stock has many dents, dings, and handling marks, and only the one noted small crack near the muzzle.
