This antique longrifle is stamped J. Cassel on the breech end of the barrel. The rifle has a New York school influence with a perch belly stock and brass furniture. The maple stock has been refinished long ago and the right hand side of the forearm has a 6" long by 1/4" wide splice to repair a damaged area along the edge of the barrel channel. The forearm of the stock is decorated with an incised molding, which appears to be a later addition to the rifle, as it is not well executed.

The barrel is just under 1" octagon by 34" overall length. The .36 caliber bore is rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for a patched round ball. Bore condition is fair with scattered light pitting visible. The muzzle end is decorated with turned rings and small evenly spaced punched dots.
The maple stock has a perch belly design and is fitted with a modestly curved brass buttplate to engage the shooter's shoulder in 19th century fashion. The buttstock is fitted with a large brass cap box. The triggerguard has a wide bow and offset grip rail with fish lip design.

Trigger reach is 13-3/4" which is about average for a mid 19th century longrifle. Weight is 8.7 pounds.
The brass buttplate has some hand engraving around the buttplate screw. The buttstock and wrist have a very slender profile, typical of late percussion longrifles.
The toeplate is hand engraved with flowing scrolls. The screws appear to be later brass replacements, as the engraving does not continue on the screw heads. The brass triggerguard is decorated with hand engraving on the bow. The brass ramrod pipes have incised rings on the ends.
This rifle is fitted with a Goulcher percussion lock. The Goulcher family made thousands of locks. They are found on plains rifles, late longrifles, pistols and shotguns of the 1840 to 1880 era. The lock has aged to a textured patina partially obscuring the stamped banner and game scene. The wood along the front edge of the lock panel has been broken and glued back in place. The wood on the upper lock panel has been replaced with a spliced in section. The drum is fitted with an antique nipple.

Single lever style double set triggers fire the Goulcher percussion lock, from the set position only. The lock may be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence, but the triggers will only function when set due to the single lever design.
The lock panels have slender proportions and has been fitted with a flush mounted lozenge style side plate to support the single lock bolt. The stock is shaped without a cheek piece.
The rifle includes an antique powder flask with embossed shell design. The large flask has a 7-1/2" overall length. The seams doe have some gaps on both sides.
