This antique halfstock rifle marked J. Clutz has a good bore and functional antique H.E. Leman lock. We found records for a gunsmith Josiah Clutz in Massillon, Ohio circa 1858 to 1866. H.E. Leman manufactured rifles and supplied locks for gunsmiths during the same period.

The stock has been sanded and has some glued repairs. The oval escutcheons, pewter forend cap, and ramrod pipes are all modern replacements. It was very common to rework antique rifles during the early 1950's to 1960's during the resurgence in the interest in muzzleloading, before many replica rifles or parts were available.

The antique .38 caliber octagon barrel is 1-1/16" octagon at the breech with a very slight taper toward the muzzle. The 33" barrel has six narrow grooves and wide lands cut rifled for pure lead round balls. The bore is mostly bright with a few scattered speckles. The exterior of the barrel has barrel has a slightly textured worn brown finish.
The walnut stock has been sanded and refinished. The sanding was unable to remove some of the deeper dents, which are still visible along the lower edge of the lock panel. The lock panel has a repaired crack from the upper corner of the square tail around the wrist to the long tang of the breech plug. The brass buttplate has the classic architecture of the Ohio region while the triggerguard has a finger spur and fish lip grip rail.

The trigger reach is 13" currently, about average for a antique percussion rifle. Weight is 9.5 pounds.
When viewed from the top the buttstock is very slender. The buttplate has been removed and when reinstalled it was fitted off to one side. A single lock bolt retains the percussion lock, a typical feature on most later percussion rifles.

The breech plug has a long tang that extends down the wrist. The top flat of the barrel is stamped J. Clutz with a engraved border. This rifle is fitted with a dovetailed rear sight fitted 7-1/2" from the breech. A modern iron blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle.
The brass furniture has a speckled patina. The forend is fitted with a modern poured pewter forend cap which also acts as the ramrod entry pipe. The two modern iron forward ramrod pipes are soldered to the directly to the barrel. Other examples of J. Clutz's work seem to favor the ramrod pipe mounted directly to the barrel design without the use of a under barrel rib.
This rifle has the classic square tail percussion lock, marked LEMAN, LANCASTER, PA on the lock plate. The lock has a textured, worn patina. The lock plate is marked with engraved swirls and scrolls, probably embossed using a die. The pattern is repeated, but inverted, at the front and tail of the lock plate. This lock has a one position tumbler. The hammer is secured with a washer and bolt. The drum is fitted with a modern stainless steel nipple.

This rifle is fitted with thin, dainty double set triggers. These triggers appear to be single lever double set triggers, which require the triggers to be set to fire the lock.
The side panel has a B. F. stamped along the front edge. No sideplate is fitted and the lock bolt is surface mounted. The buttstock is shaped with a oval cheek piece typical of the 1860 era.
