This replica 1860 Type 2 Richards conversion revolver was manufactured in Italy by Aldo Uberti. In 1871 Colt employee Charles Richards was awarded a patent for converting Colt Navy percussion revolvers to a breech loading cartridge revolver. In 1872 William Mason, another Colt employee, was awarded a patent for an improvement to the Richards model and the 1860 Richards-Mason Conversion model revolvers were produced circa 1877 to 1878. This is an example of the Richard's conversion that uses the earlier style ejector rod, which mounts through the loading lever port on 1860 percussion barrels, it was a true conversion of the original cap and ball revolvers. The later Richard-Mason conversion revolvers used a newly designed barrel assembly, meant to use up remaining 1860 frames from the American Civil War. This revolver is chambered for the .44 Colt cartridge. The cylinder and barrel are finished to a dark blue. The frame, hammer, and back plate are color case hardened to blues and grays. The triggerguard and back strap are blued steel. This revolver is in near-new condition and appears unfired. It includes the original factory box.
The barrel is fitted with a blade front sight. The rear sight is integral to the hammer rather than on the breechplate, one of the identifying features on this model. The top of the barrel is stamped Cimarron FA Co. Fredericksburg Texas, Made in Italy. The bottom of the barrel is stamped .44 Colt. An ejector rod allows easy removal of spent cartridges.
The backstrap is blued steel. The cylinder is roll engraved with a naval scene. The bluing on the cylinder and barrel appear as-new. The wedge key does not display any marks from disassembly. The color case hardening displays mottled blues, purples, and grays. The frame is stamped -Pat. July 28, 1871- / -Pat. July 2. 1872-. The side of the trigger guard is stamped 44 CAL.
