This antique 12 gauge double barrel English shotgun is marked Williams & Powell. Thomas Williams & Samuel Powell, established 1780 in Liverpool. The original partnership lasted until 1846 and the company continued under the same name until 1909 making various firearms. This shotgun likely dates from the last quarter of the 19th century. This is a very finely made shotgun with checkered English walnut stock, finely engraved action and locks, and horn buttplate. The English walnut stock displays attractive swirls of dark pattern and the checkering on the wrist and forearm is crisp. The action locks up tight. Trigger reach is 14-1/4" and 13-1/2", and this shotgun weighs 7.3 pounds.

The Damascus steel barrels are 30 inches long and chambered for up to 2-1/2" black powder shot shells. Our 12 gauge 2-1/2 brass shot shells fit correctly and operate smoothly when opening and closing the action. The right barrel measures .704" at the muzzle. The left barrel measures .709" at the muzzle. The exterior of the barrels have aged to a dark brown, with the wire twist pattern still visible on both barrels. The right hand bore is mostly bright with very few scattered light pits visible. The left hand bore is mirror bright and appears as-new. The barrel rib is marked Williams & Powell Patent (Simplex) 25 South Castle Street Liverpool. A small brass bead serves as a front sight. The barrels have London proof marks under the breeches.

The walnut stock is fitted with a checkered horn buttplate. The buttstock has a few small handling marks, but no cracks or chips. The heel of the horn buttplate displays some wear from being placed on the ground. The top view reveals that this gun is stocked with a cast-off for a right hand shooter. The cast off helps center the shooters eye along the centerline of the barrels. The checkered forearm features a engraved steel inset tip. The forearm has a very interesting captured spring loaded wedge key with a checkered head to retain the forearm. Push the key to the side and pull the tip of the forearm down to release it. The triggerguard has aged to a dark gray, with the engraving on the bow and grip rail still appearing crisp and visible. The 63xx serial number on the grip rail matches the barrels and action. The frame has some faint color case hardened colors remaining and is expertly hand engraved with small interlocking scroll designs. The screws on the buttplate, triggerguard grip rail, and action are all neatly aligned, in English fashion. .

The locks have rebounding hammers, to relieve pressure from the firing pins after firing, to allow easy extraction of the cases. This improvement allows the breech to open, without dragging the firing pins across the primers. Both locks function correctly. The lock plates are highly engraved with interlocking scroll designs, and marked Williams & Powell beneath the water table. The action lever has an interesting pierced design, and is still quite tight and properly functions to “break” the action to facilitate loading and unloading of the gun. The extractor presents a cartridge for removal. A brass shield initial plate is unmarked behind the lever of the action.

This very fine antique double barrel cartridge shotgun has mostly bright bores with only a few scattered pits on the right hand bore. The locks are crisp. The action is tight.
