Our full length view shows this Marlin Model 1893 lever action rifle with full magazine. Constructed circa in the early 1900's this rifle qualifies as a post 1898 antique and if purchased, must be shipped to a FFL dealer. The buttplate on this rifle has been replaced and a flat sheet steel buttplate is fitted to the stock. The stock has a number of old dents, dings, and scratches. There is a unfilled hole on the toe. Inletting on the buttstock is only fair with visible gaps, and brown epoxy repairs at the upper corner of the action and tang. The forearm has a much better fit, but still has developed a chip at the front of the action.
The 24" tapered round "black powder steel barrel" has aged to a silver gray patina. The barrel is chambered for a .38-55 cartridge for black powder barrels. The "black powder barrels" were considered a "B" grade in the period. Marlin was using up old stock of softer steel barrels after the introduction of smokeless powder barrels. The bore on this barrel is mostly bright, with a few scattered speckles. The top of the barrel is marked THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. * * * * Pat''d Oct. 11, 1887, April 2,1889, Aug. 1 1893 * * * *. The barrel is also marked For Black Powder beneath the step adjustable rear sight. The front sight appears to be period, but is currently installed backwards.
Cartridge cases, or loaded ammunition, are readily available from a variety of sources. It may be wise to buy a quantity of cases, all at the same time, from the same lot, for uniformity. We recommend ordering a least 100 cases, and perhaps 200, depending on your reloading schedule. Track can supply the mold, shell holder, loading dies, bullet lubricant, loading press, sizing dies, and black powder.
The tang is stamped Model 1893 on two lines. The bottom view shows the rounded toe, which has a number of marks from over a century of use. The toe has a unfilled hole. likely from a previously installed swivel. The lever action was blued vs. color case hardened, which has faded over time to a patina brown-gray. The top of the action is marked Marlin Safety. The action cycles corectly. A few screw slots show some minor wear from a ill fitted screwdriver, but not all.
