This Sharps Model 1877 Rifle is best quality. It was manufactured by the now retired Axtell Rifle Company, Sheridan, Montana. This Model 1877 rifle weighs 11 pounds and has a 13-3/4" trigger reach. This rifle qualifies for FFL transfer and can be picked up by a Minnesota resident, or it must be shipped to a FFL dealer in another state.
The 30" barrel is tapered octagon and chambered in caliber .45-70 Government. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The top flat is marked Axtell Rifle Co. and Model 1877 / Sheridan, Montana. The caliber marking is on the left hand side flat. The barrel is fitted with a Montana Vintage Arms spirit level front sight with windage adjustment. No barrel mounted rear sight is fitted. The tang has a M.V.A. Soule sight with 2-1/4" of elevation adjustment. The staff is fitted with a M.V.A. brand Hadley eye disk, to best suit changing light conditions.
Stocked in walnut with a checkered pistol grip, forearm, and finished to a satin sheen. Metal to wood fit is excellent and this rifle has been well maintained with only a few small handling marks. The buttplate is checkered steel The rounded toe of this 1877 buttstock tapers to the applied pistol grip. The checkered pistol grip is fitted with a steel grip cap. The wrist and forearm have hand cut checkering. The forend is shaped with a schnabel tip.
Beautifully color case hardened, in subtle shades of blues, purples, gray, with faint yellow undertones, this slender back action lock is very attractive and retains all of its spectacular color. The 1877 Sharps lock is smooth and crisp, with a reliable half-cock safety notch positioned just above the firing pin. Put the lock at half cock and push the loading lever all the way forward drop the breech for loading. Double lever double set triggers are fitted. The triggers are properly tuned to fire set, or unset. You may set the triggers before or after cocking the lock.

This used 1877 Sharps rifle has only the long range staff for shooting from supine position. This rifle will require load development, and fine tuning, for serious target competition.
