This full length U. S. Model 1884 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle has a well used appearance. The walnut stock has more than a few scattered dents, dings, and handling marks. Although it has aged to a dark coloration the inspector's cartouche marks are plainly visible on the stock and barrel. Produced circa 1889 the Model 1884 was in production until late 1890 when manufacture turned to the 1888 rod bayonet model, production of which continued into 1893. Production information, and other useful trapdoor info, can be found in the book Trapdoor Springfield, by M.D. “Bud" Waite and B.D. Ernst.

Chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The barrel has aged to a dark gray patina with scattered brown spots between the barrel bands. The bore is mirror bright and has been very well maintained. It should make a fine shooter. The barrel is marked with the V, view proof, over P, firing proof, proof marks. Just below these marks is an upraised eagle head over P. The top of the tapered round barrel is marked with a stamped letter A, an individual inspector's mark. The Buffington rear sight is the best feature of this trapdoor rifle. Screw adjustments for windage and elevation work smoothly, and the sight is calibrated up to 2,000 yards. The Director of Civilian Marksmanship offered Trapdoor rifles to NRA members at low cost, and such famous mail order merchants as Sears and Roebuck listed such guns in their early catalogs. This nice rifle has not been sporterized, as were many of the rifles sold to the public.

The blue on the furniture has aged to a browns showing the most visible wear on the buttplate from being placed on the ground. The lock works crisply, and the trigger release is positive and smooth. This rifle has the improved grooved faced target style trigger. The comb extension of the buttplate is stamped with U.S.. The serial number, 471XXX, clearly marked on the breech of the rifle. The exterior of the breech block has aged to with some muted color case hardened colors visible. The door itself bears the markings U.S. over MODEL over 1884

The triggerguard still has a good amount of the original blue with scattered brown spots. The rear sling swivel attached to the front of the triggerguard bow has the same appearance. Rearward the letter P in a circle is visible just below the triggerguard, this is yet another firing proof mark. Forward the two barrel bands, and their retention springs, are in the correct position. Both are marked with the letter U, the open end of which faces forward on the right side of the rifle. The cleaning rod is in its correct location, retained by the unique locking mechanism that requires one to pull down on the end of the rod to relieve tension on the notched portion of the rod.

The lock works crisply, and the trigger release is positive at only 2 to 3 pounds pressure. The grooved face target style trigger feels very nice, with a smooth release. The trapdoor action is solid, and the firing pin moves smoothly within the breech block, as it should. The lock plate is marked with a forward facing eagle next to U.S. over SPRINGFIELD.

This is a nice specimen of a U. S. 1884 Springfield rifle. The inspector's cartouche, SWP, for Samuel W. Porter, is visible in the stock behind the rear most lock bolt along with the date, 1889. For additional information take a look at the book The .45-70 Springfield by Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch. We stock .45-70 dies. We strongly prefer black powder handloads, and especially the 500 grain original U. S. Army - Frankfort Arsenal bullet, now known as the Lyman 457-125 bullet. We recommend 500 grain cast lead alloy bullets, sized to fit the grooves, with SPG lubricant, over our thin card wad. You can easily assemble your own cartridges using our inexpensive reloading tools and molds. The bore is clean and bright, in excellent condition.

This antique rifle has a bright perfect bore. The stock has scattered handling marks that give it a used, but well maintained appearance. It should make a excellent shooter as long as it is properly cleaned after use. This rifle will require load development, and fine tuning, for serious target competition. We enjoy casting bullets, hand loading black powder cartridges, and enjoyable afternoons at our local 100, 200, 400, and 600 yard range. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
