This antique .55 caliber smoothbore trade pistol is marked Lane & Read, Boston on the lock. Lane & Read Boston marked locks are often found on 1826 - 1849 period guns, made by cottage industry gunsmiths for the trade firm owned by William Reed. This small percussion lock would likely be from the last 10 years of that period. The pistol is stocked in walnut and trimmed in period German silver furniture. The bore is dark and pitted, and we note the grip has been repaired. The back action percussion lock is engraved and functions correctly.

The .55 caliber smoothbore is dark with pitting running its entire length. The octagon-to-round barrel measures 5-1/2" from the breech to muzzle, with a wedding band transition. This pistol has a small silver bead front sight, and the rear sight is an integral part of the tang. Designed as a pocket pistol, it was intended for use at short range. We note the small rear sight is crooked and not aligned with the barrel. The hook breech and tang are engraved, along with the head of the tang bolt. The barrel has aged to a mottled gray brown patina

The walnut stock is trimmed in period German silver furniture. The grip was broken and repaired long ago. It is very difficult to see the repair under casual inspection. The grip of the triggerguard has a brazed repair that has covered some of the engraved border on the grip rail. The grip is fitted with a silver buttcap with a lid that opens to reveal a cavity for storing percussion caps. A screw can be seen in the cavity that was used to repair the grip. A silver thumbpiece decorates the top of the grip. The bow and front finial of the trigger guard are engraved. A pin secures the front of the guard and two small screws secure the rear.

Silver escutcheon plates surround the wedge key that allows the hooked breech barrel to be easily removed from the stock for cleaning. A pewter cap is fitted to protect the end grain, and we note the wood is chipped out around the top of the cap on the left side of the stock. An engraved silver entry pipe and single forward pipe soldered to the barrel's under rib secure the ramrod to the stock. The wood ramrod does not have threaded tips to accept loading or cleaning accessories. An engraved German silver side plate surrounds the engraved head of the lock bolt.

The small back action percussion lock is engraved and marked Lane & Read, Boston. The lock has a strong mainspring and functions correctly. The lock stands proud of the wood, especially near the tail where the grip repair was made and the wood was reshaped to blend the repair. The hammer is engraved. A antique nipple is fitted to the breech, and appears to have been in position for a considerable length of time. We did not attempt to remove the nipple..
