This antique pistol stocked in dense European walnut, this .58 caliber smoothbore pistol has a checkered grip with a flared end in French fashion. The pistol is trimmed in iron furniture and although it is not highly decorated it is neatly fitted. The late flint period lock was converted to percussion with a type of conversion often performed in the Germanic states of Europe in the 19th century. The stock still has the relief cuts for the stop on the flint cock.

The small lock had late flint styling with a slightly pointed tail. The pan, frizzen, and frizzen spring were removed. A bolster with nipple was added as well as a rounded fence around the bolster. The hammer has a distinctive continental European appearance. The hammer has a small amount of fore and aft play on the tumbler shank. The half cock position on this lock is just above the nipple. The full cock position is not secure and firm pressure on the back of the hammer will push it out of the full cock notch.

The .58 caliber smoothbore has scattered pitting. The barrel has a swamped profile with a larger breech, narrow waist, and flared muzzle. This pistol has a small blade front sight, a rear sight is forged as a integral part of the tang. Not designed as a target pistol, it was intended for use at short range. The breech end of the barrel has a few decorative gold inlaid bands. The barrel has aged to a aged mottled gray brown patina

The stock has period flat checkered grip with a flare at the bottom. A iron grip cap is fitted to protect the end grain. The triggerguard has a long grip rail with large bow to access the trigger. The bow has a spur on the front lower edge. The triggerguard finial has a Fluer de Lys shape. A entry pipe and single forward pipe secure the ramrod to the stock. The wood ramrod is a old replacement and does not have any tips. The side panel is fitted with two sideplates fitted flush with the side panel. As with many antiques the stock has a crack from the breech down to the rear lock bolt from the wood shrinking against the barrel as it aged.

This likely Belgian manufactured late flint period piece was still useful for personal defense well into the percussion period based on the conversion. The bore size alone would likely to deter many wood be robbers. . Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted.
