This double shotgun is stamped E. Allen & Co., Makers on the front action locks. This marking would put the shotgun in the 1865 to 1871 era. This antique shotgun has a used but well cared for appearance with some small handling marks on the refinished stock and a gray brown twist pattern on the Damascus barrels. The checkering on the wrist has been recut. The wedge key requires a firm push to remove it with finger pressure, allowing the barrels to unhook from the tang, for easy cleaning. This is apparently the original key, captured by a pin to prevent loss. Although no proof marks are visible on the bottom of the barrels. This shotgun has a very distinctive European style and it is very likely that this shotgun was made in Europe and imported for sale in the U.S. When this shotgun was restored to service the stock was lengthened with a modern rubber recoil pad. Trigger reach is 14-3/4" and 13-3/4". Weight is 7.7 pounds.

The 30-1/2" barrels are marked Fine Stub Twist on the upper rib. Having aged to a gray brown patina the barrels have a visible pattern over the full length. The 11 gauge bores measure ..748" for the right and .744" for the left, and both bores have a frosted appearance with some scattered light pitting. Both barrels feel smooth with a cleaning patch. The breeches are fitted with modern nipples and both appear to be serviceable. When you want to replace them we recommend replacing the nipples with our #RST-I nipples for the antique appearance and service life. The joint of the tang and hook, hooks up tight with no play, wear, or slack. The plug has only one large hook rather than two smaller hooks a feature we have noted on other Ethan Allen & Co. shotguns.

Stocked in English walnut the stock has a dark patina near the recoil pad, wrist and around the lock panels. The spacer and recoil pad increased the trigger reach. The inlet for the comb of the original buttplate has been filled. The checkering on the wrist has been recut, and is a slightly different pattern than the forearm. The lock panels taper to the rear, and locks are positioned behind the barrels to help create a slender wrist. The short English tang has a nicely engraved border and scroll designs.

The engraved steel triggerguard has a scroll design on the triggerguard and grip rail. The wedge key is surrounded by oval escutcheon plates. The key is captured and drifts far enough to allow the barrels to be removed, but remains in the stock. The ramrod appears to be antique, but has a 1/8" thick aluminum plate on the end on the hidden end of the rod which is a modern addition. This small addition was likely a palm saver for the otherwise squared end of the rod.

The front action locks are engraved. Both hammers have very long noses to fully enclose the nipple in late fashion. The lower edge of the lock plate is stamped E. Allen & Co. Makers. These locks have half cock positions just above the nipples, so you will have to raise them to provide easy access when capping. The hammers align at the half cock and full cock positions. Both hammers are well fitted with no play. Internally these locks have a fancy three screw bridle, and the unusual feature of a flat mainspring and sear spring dovetailed into the plate from the ends. This flat spring allows more wood to remain on the stock. We have noted this lock style and design on other Ethan Allen & Co. shotguns.

This double barrel shotgun is a fine piece of craftsmanship from the mid to late nineteenth century. Restored to service it has had a modern recoil pad fitted. The bores are not perfect, but very serviceable. Antique shotguns should never be loaded with modern steel shot. Use lead shot for trap competition and upland game hunting. Use Bismuth non-toxic shot for ducks and geese. The percussion locks are crisp. As long as this shotgun is properly cleaned and maintained after use it should give another life time of service. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
