This fine antique double barrel percussion shotgun is stocked in checkered walnut with crisp locks, and swirl pattern damascus barrels engraved Jno Lane Gunmaker Leamington No 1031 on the upper rib. We believe this to be English gunmaker John Lane who worked at 1 Tavistock St, Leamington, Warks circa 1865-70, 1 Warwick St circa 1874, 35 Warwick St circa 1883. Trigger reach is 14-1/4" and this shotgun weighs 7.2 pounds.

The 16 gauge bores measure .655", a bit tighter than the .660" standard that we consider a 16 gauge today. Both bores are bright and have been very well maintained for a 150+ year old shotgun. The exterior of the swirl pattern Damascus barrels are finished to a brown with a gloss finish. The 31-1/2" barrels are full original length with the small catch at the end for the ramrod. The bottom of the breeches have London proof house markings, 19, and a small J.S stamp.

The shotgun is stocked in European walnut with a checkered wrist and forearm. You can see how much the design of the late 19th century English gunmakers influenced modern shotguns with buttstock shape. The buttplate is wide, nearly flat to spread the felt recoil over a large area. The buttplate is finished to a deep blue and has been shaped with a long stepped comb that is expertly hand engraved. The stock displays some wood shrinkage with the buttplate comb standing proud of the stock. The wrist and forearm are checkered to provide the shooter with a secure grip. The barrels are secured to the forearm with a single captured wedge key. When removing the barrels the breeches are notched and the stock is fitted with a small engraved wear plate to protect the wood at the breech end of the stock.

The rounded toe of th stock is fitted with a silver initial plate. The triggerguard is engraved with a boar's head and hunting horn. The pineapple finial triggerplate and ramrod entry pipe are both expertly hand engraved. The stock has one small chip near the front final. The ramrod appears to be fully original finished to an ebony black with a flared tip and reversable worm on the opposite end.

The front action locks have aged to a silvery gray patina. The locks are crisp with secure half cock and full cock notches that properly align at the half and full cock positions. Both locks are expertly hand engraved with scrolls and Jno Long below the breech. The hammers are shaped as dolphin or fish heads and finely checkered hammer spurs. The tang is shaped with a high flash fence to protect the wood at the breech from cap spray.

A very well made antique late percussion double barrel shotgun with bright bores and crisp English locks. At 130+ years old this shotgun has some small handling marks, but is still very finely finished. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
