This antique Smith Carbine was manufactured by AMERICAN MACHINE WORKS, also marked ADDRESS POULTNEY & TRIMBLE, BALTIMORE, U.S.A. and SMITH’S PATENT/JUNE 23 1857. Circa 1861 to 1865, two other firms also produced versions of this carbine and it is estimated over 30,000 were made.
This percussion breech loading carbine is one of many invented during that burst of Yankee ingenuity during the Civil War. A number of Union cavalry regiments were issued the Smith Carbine including the 3rd West Virginia, 7th & 11th Illinois, 1st Connecticut, 7th & 17th Pennsylvania, 6th & 9th Ohio, and 1st Massachusetts. As with many weapons during the Civil War the Smith Carbine had it's admirers and detractors.
This .50 caliber percussion carbine tips open to allow loading from the breech. The 21-1/2" long .50 caliber barrel is rifled with three grooves, in military style. The bore is bright, in excellent condition, and it is easily cleaned, since the breech opens wide. The barrel mounted military carbine sight has a V notch. The ladder snaps upright, and a sliding bar allows elevation. A silver blade front sight is dovetailed directly behind the muzzle. The left flat is stamped L.F.R. near the breech.
Stocked in walnut, this Smith Carbine has scattered handling marks from over 100+ years of handling. The left side of the wrist has clear cartouche marks visible. The first is L.F.R. in a rectangle and the second is F.H. in an oval. Trimmed entirely in steel, the furniture was polished and blued, much of which has aged to a gray brown patina. The action still has much of its original case colors still visible.
The top view shows the military carbine buttplate, sleek comb, and the unique top latch spring. This pendulum shaped latch spring snaps closed smartly. This antique action still locks up tight. Notice the brass plunger lever, ahead of the trigger, inside the triggerguard. Firm pressure on the brass plunger lifts the spring latch, allowing the breech to swing open, for easy loading.
The bottom view shows the pivoting hinge ahead of the triggerguard, and the cavalry style saddle ring swivel bar. The triggerguard still shows most of its original bluing. The five digit serial number 10979 is stamped on the breech end of the hinge, and matching serial number is stamped on the action side of the hinge.
A saddle ring or bar is mounted to the side of this carbine, an essential feature on a firearm intended for combat on horseback. Cavalry carbines have that feature, Artillery carbines omit that bar and ring.
The maker's marks are stamped on the left side of the action. The upper edge of the action is stamped in three lines Address / Poultney & Trimble / Baltimore U.S.A.. The bottom of the breech is stamped Manufactured by / AMN MCHN WKS / Springfield Mass. Hidden beneath the bar is the marking Smith's Patent / June 23, 1857.
With a bright bore, tight action with visible case colors, and crisp cartouche marks, this Antique Smith Carbine will be of great interest to a Civil War collector. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
