The 1st Pattern Brunswick Rifle was adopted in 1837 and was the first percussion rifle adopted by the British military. The rifle features a hooked breech with keyed barrel and back action percussion lock. This replica musket was assembled from parts cast by The Rifle Shoppe fitted to an antique barrel. The percussion period saw the development of many British smoothbore musket and rifle patterns during the late 1830's to the 1850's.

Officially a .70 caliber we measure this barrel bore land to land at .721" at the muzzle with two grooves, .763" groove to groove, for use with a belted ball. The bore is fair with some dark spots clearly visible. The antique barrel is 30-3/16" long including the breech. The exterior of the barrel has a smooth brown finish with the twist pattern visible beneath the finish. The barrel is fitted with a military style blade front sight. A flat top rear sight with a single leaf is fitted ahead of the breech. The right hand side of the barrel is fitted with a bayonet lug for a sword bayonet.
The walnut stock is dense straight grain, selected for strength. The stock has a few small handling marks with a few small chips around some of the pin holes for the ramrod entry pipe. The barrel is secured with three wedge keys and a hooked breech to allow for easy cleaning.

The large bullet shaped patchbox has a single screw securing the head. The door is secured with a spring latch. Beneath the door is a round cavity for patches, and a separate square cavity fitted with a steel post with a rotating brass bar.

Trigger reach is 13-1/2" and this rifle weighs 8.8 pounds.
The buttplate has a long tapered comb with a rounded end. The breech end is fitted with a round hooked breech tang with a color case hardened finish. The tang has a small crown over 2 inspection mark. The lock panels taper widest at the front to create as slim a wrist as possible with the back action lock.
The rifle has a rounded toe. The triggerguard is nicely mounted with two screws in the grip rail and one in the front final. The rear swivel is mounted through the front of the triggerguard bow. The forward swivel is positioned to rest against the body of the forward trumpet shaped ramrod pipe.
The lock plate is marked RL Manufactory Enfield with a crown over VR. The lock plate also has a small crown broad arrow and a 1842 date, noting the year of manufacture. The lock is attractively color case hardened and works well with a crisp half cock and full cock notch. The breech is fitted with a steel nipple.
The sideplate is a simple washer style to support the single lock bolt. The side panel and buttstock both have a few scattered handling marks from use.
