This percussion halfstock plains rifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in nickel silver furniture. A percussion lock, with drum and nipple is installed into the .58 caliber barrel. The rifle has fairly bulky shaping with a "squared" forend and very wide lock panels. The rifle must have had some form of telescope mounted at some point. The barrel sidewall has some tapped blind holes and the forearm is cut down Trigger reach is 13-1/4 inches, to best fit todays average size shooter. Trigger reach is 14-1/2" and the weight is 10.3 pounds.

The .58 caliber barrel is 1-1/8" octagon by 32" overall length. The bore is rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. A tall "patridge" style blade sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. A semi buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 12-1/2" ahead of the breech. The top flat is stamped .58 CAL with individual stamps. The quarter flat is marked R.L.M. No. 48. The side wall has two blind holes and the forearm has been cut down for clearance on the left hand side of the stock.

Stocked in maple the rifle is fitted with a nickel silver crescent buttplate and English influenced triggerguard. The furniture appears to have a applied brass black finish that has been rubbed back. The inlet around the triggerguard has some visible gaps. A poured pewter forend cap protects the end grain of the stock. The ramrod passes through a two steel forward ramrod pipes into the forend cap. The lock panels and forend have very broad panels giving the rifle a very square appearance. The lock panels are very wide due to a design decision. The lock was not positioned against the sidewall of the barrel. A thin layer of wood remains between the lock and barrel with the lock positioned outboard to center it on the nipple on the drum. The comb of the stock has a pointed front that blends into the square cheek piece with stepped face.

This rifle uses a Belgian made percussion lock, that likely dates from the 1960's. The lock does not have a internal axle on the tumbler that engages the bridle, or a fly detent. The lock is finished to a dark brown with some patina from firing and cleaning. The wood near the cap displays some discoloration from repeated cap flash. The single trigger has enough leverage to easily over power the half cock notch.
