This slender percussion Plains rifle appears as a scaled down Hawken rifle. The rifle is stocked in straight grain maple stained to a dark tone, and trimmed in browned iron furniture. The .45 caliber 13/16" octagon barrel gives this rifle a modest weight. The percussion lock is a Siler mountain caplock, cut to accept the snail bolster of the patent style breech. The rifle is signed C. Townsend. The rifle is neatly fitted and finished with some handling marks from use and age. This halfstock plains rifle weighs 6 pounds. It balances in your hands, just below the rear sight. Trigger reach is 13", to fit a smaller than average size shooter. It would make a very fine youth or ladies rifle.
The Green Mountain cut rifled barrel measures 30" by 13/16" octagon. Rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 60" twist for patched round ball. Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. We recommend our .440" pure lead round ball, patched with .017" Ox-Yoke ticking, lubricated with our Mink Oil patch grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy. A iron blade front sight is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. The rear sight currently fitted is a Marbles elevation adjustable rear sight, fitted to a dovetail 10" ahead of the breech. This sight is not traditional in appearance, but is very serviceable.
The maple stock is well finished, stained to a dark tone with a satin sheen. The stock has a few scattered handling marks and one small lifted chip at the heel of the buttplate from the metal compressing against the stock as it has aged. The buttstock is fitted with a Hawken style crescent buttplate. The tang of the patent style breech comes to the mid point of the wrist. Although this rifle does not have a hooked breech the forearm is fitted with two wedge keys through brown steel escutcheon plates. All the mounting screws are neatly indexed to the barrel.
The iron toeplate protects the toe, ending in the traditional beaver tail finial. The long trigger bar, anchored to the long tang with two tang bolts, supports and re-enforces the wrist. The triggerguard is shaped with a wide open bow. The forend is fitted with a poured pewter nose cap, and iron ramrod entry pipe. The snugly fitted 3/8" tapered hickory ramrod is well finished, with a brass tip at the front threaded 10-32 to accept your cleaning jag or patch worm. The single lock bolt, and tear drop escutcheon around it, are classic features of a halfstock Hawken plains rifle, from the 1835 - 1845 era. The beaver tail shaped cheek piece with accent line adds comfort for a right hand shooter, while aiming this slender .45 caliber rifle.
Ignition is provided by this percussion Siler Mountain caplock notched to accept the snail of the bolster. This nice lock uses Siler internals, so spare parts are readily available if needed. The lock, barrel, and steel parts are finished to a smooth nice brown. The lock has a smooth nice trigger release, short hammer travel, and fast lock time. You can see the excellent shaping with the very trim lock panels. The breech is fitted with a short 1/4-28 nipple. Order our nipple PST-S if you require a spare. L&R Hawken double lever double set triggers may be set, or the lock cocked, in any sequence. Triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers. This trigger is well tuned, with a light release, even when the triggers are not set.
With very well fitted parts, slender shaping, and a very modest 6 pound weight. This .45 caliber Plains rifle is easy to handle. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
