This Lancaster County style percussion longrifle has the appearance of a late 18th century longrifle that was converted to percussion circa 1830. The rifle is stocked in curly maple and trimmed in brass furniture. The .38 caliber R.A. Hoyt straight octagon barrel and L&R Classic percussion lock are finished to a smooth chocolate brown. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. This rifle was built by Scott Coy. Trigger reach is 13-7/8" to fit today's average size shooter. This handy rifle weighs 7.7 pounds.

The .38 caliber R.A. Hoyt barrel is 7/8" straight octagon by 34" long. The bore is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves with a twist appropriate for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. We recommend our .375" pure lead round ball, patched with .010" Ox-Yoke brand bulk patching, cut at the muzzle. Lubricate with our Mink Oil patch grease, beef tallow, or animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy. The barrel is finished to a smooth chocolate brown. The left barrel flat is signed R.A. Hoyt near the breech. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 8-1/2" ahead of the breech. A browned iron front sight is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle.

This percussion longrifle has a nice wide brass buttplate in mid-to-late 18th century fashion. The buttplate will spread the felt recoil from this .38 caliber bore over a large area. The maple stock is stained to a honey maple color. The top view shows the flared tang of the breech plug with a single bolt that passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. The barrel is retained to the forestock with three pins. We note there is a small 1" repaired hairline crack at the top of the forearm on the right side above the middle ramrod pipe. The bottom view reveals the brass toe plate mounted with two fire blued screws. The triggerguard is retained by two pins, as is traditional. The forend is fitted with two octagon shaped brass ramrod pipes, and matching entry pipe. The wooden ramrod is decorated with a barber pole design and is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 8-32 loading and cleaning jags. A brass muzzle cap is fitted to protect the endgrain of the stock. The lock is secured with two domed head lock bolts that pass through a surface mounted brass sideplate. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek to give a right hand shooter a comfortable place to align the sights.

Ignition for the longrifle is provided by an L&R Classic percussion conversion lock. This Germanic style lock is designed to appear as an earlier flintlock conversion to percussion with the remnants of a pan and filled holes from the frizzen and frizzen spring. The lock is browned to match the barrel. The drum is well supported by the lock plate and a stainless steel 1/4-28 threaded nipple is fitted to the drum. A single trigger with curled tip is fitted and provides a smooth release of the lock.
