This antique Ohio style halfstock rifle is stocked in dark stained maple and trimmed in brass furniture with a poured pewter forend cap. The stock is decorated with nickel silver inlays and capbox. The barrel is signed Wm C. M. Trigger reach is 12" , not unusual for a antique longrifle. Weight is 10.6 pounds. The rifle has some repairs and alterations.

The 34" barrel is 1-1/16" octagon. The .40 caliber bore has dark grooves with some scattered pitting visible on the lands. The barrel is fitted with period rear sight dovetailed 10-1/2" ahead of the breech. The blade on the sight has been broken off and a modern sight has been screwed onto the antique base. A very low period front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The barrel has aged to a brown patina.

The maple stock is fitted with a deep crescent buttplate to engage the shooter's shoulder. The maple stock has aged to a dark tone, with a varnish applied. The stock has been broken through the wrist and repaired with brown epoxy and nails. You can see rasp marks in the stock from dressing the repair down. One inlay that intersected the crack is missing. The toe has a crack that has opened up along a grain boundary. The pointed breech plug extends to the rear of the lock panels. The slender toe is protected with a toeplate.

The triggerguard is screwed to the stock, and both screws appear to be modern replacements with oversize heads that are not well fitted. The forearm is fitted with a poured pewter forend cap that also acts as the ramrod entry pipe. The barrel rib is fitted with nickel silver ramrod pipes. The ramrod has a candy cane finish visible on the protected area in the forearm, while the exposed area has aged to a dark patina. The ramrod has no tips. A single lock bolt mounts the lock through a fancy sideplate nailed to the side panel. The cheek is fitte with a large nickel silver star inlay.

The percussion lock by G. Goulcher has die embossed designs. The lock appears to have been wire wheel polished long ago. The lock has only a single position tumbler, typical of many antique percussion locks. The hammer is either fully cocked, or fully down. This simplification makes set triggers much easier to install, as the lock will not require a fly detent. The bolster does not appear to be forged to the barrel and is likely threaded on to the barrel similar to a drum. The "bolster" is fitted with a antique nipple, we did not attempt to remove it. The single lever double set triggers will only fire the lock from the set position. The lock can be cocked before the triggers are set, but it will only fire from the set position. The small screw between the trigger adjusts the set trigger pressure.
