This halfstock longrifle is stocked in walnut and trimmed in nickel silver furniture, which was a popular combination for Eastern rifles in the mid to late 19th century. The rifle is fitted with a mule ear or side slapper percussion lock, mated to a .30 caliber straight octagon barrel. This rifle includes a short starter, powder measure, and cleaning jag, which are required for this smaller than is common caliber. Used, this rifle has a few small handling marks on the wood and metal. It is light weight at 6.6 pounds, with a 13" trigger reach.

The .30 caliber barrel is 13/16" octagon by 32" long. The bore is rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright, with a few scattered speckles visible about 3" down the bore, nothing can be felt with a cleaning patch. Barrel mfg. is unknown. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 8" from the breech. A brass blade front sight with steel base is dovetailed behind the muzzle.

The walnut stock is stained to a medium brown with a reddish undertone. The buttplate is slender with a modest curve to engage the shoulder in late 19th century style. The moderate weight combined with the small caliber should produce minimal recoil. The furniture on the rifle is well fitted, and the buttstock, wrist, and forearm have slender shaping. The forend is fitted with a poured pewter forend cap that also acts as the ramrod entry pipe. The toe is protected by a long nickel silver triggerplate. The triggerguard has a late 19th century appearance with a slender bow for the single trigger. A 1/4" diameter ramrod with a steel tip with 8-32 threads for shooting accessories is fitted to the nickel silver ramrod pipes. A lozenge style sideplate is fitted to the side panel. The side panel is well shaped to give the rifle a slender wrist. The buttstock is shaped with an oval cheek piece for a right hand shooter.

The mule ear, or side slapper lock is finished to a dark brown. We believe this coil spring operated lock was made by Dale Storey. The trigger has a very high pivot point for to operate the horizontal sear. The trigger has enough leverage it can overpower the half cock notch and drop the hammer from the half cock position. It has a very light, crisp release in full cock. The nipple is mounted directly into the side flat of the barrel to provide direct access to the black powder charge in the barrel. A brass flash cup is fitted to protect the barrel and wood from repeated cap flash damage.

This very small caliber longrifle is used with a few handling marks. Shaped with a strong late 19th century style this rifle is well fitted and has slender shaping.
