This .50 caliber Thompson Center Hawken percussion rifle is ready to shoot. This rifle was finished from a kit and is stocked in American black walnut, with brass furniture, and browned 28" barrel. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The brass furniture has darkened over time, and the stock has a few minor handling marks from use. Weight is 8.4 pounds, and with a trigger reach of 14-1/4 inches, the rifle is perfectly setup for today's taller than average man size shooter.
The browned barrel is .50 caliber, 15/16" octagon, 28" length. The front sight is Thompson Center's steel bead sight. The rear sight is click adjustable for elevation, and screw adjustable for windage. Both sights were left unfinished in-the-white. The bore is bright and clean, with crisp rifling grooves. We recommend our .490" round ball, .015" patch, and Mink Oil tallow patch lubricant, over a charge of 70 grains of GOEX FFg black powder. The barrel's exterior is finished to a chocolate brown. The browned barrel tang is retained with two unfinished Phillips screws, which were the temporary screws supplied in kit guns.
The rifle is stocked in black walnut, and finished to a dull light brown. The rifle is trimmed in brass furniture, which has aged to a dark mellow patina. Some light file marks can be seen in the brass, which were not fully polished out during the finishing process. We note the nose cap is retained with Phillips screws. The wood has some minor handling marks and light scratches from use. The wooden ramrod is fitted with brass ramrod tips, with 10-32 threads for accessories. The beaver tail cheek piece is shaped for a right hand shooter. The lock is retained by a single lock bolt with round, brass washer-style side plate.
The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlug, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.
The color case hardened percussion lock is factory engraved. This lock works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent to allow the use of double set triggers. The breech is fitted with a 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple. Double lever double set triggers are well adjusted, to fire set or unset. When the rear trigger is set (latched), the front trigger has a hair-trigger release, perhaps 2 or 3 ounces. The adjustment screw between the triggers allows even finer or coarser adjustment, as desired. Or, turn the screw fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold weather. The trigger assembly is also unfinished in-the-white.
Used, this T/C Hawken rifle assembled from a kit has a bright well maintained bore. It is ready to shoot, and will serve you well at the range or in the woods on your next hunt. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
