Henry Eicholtz Leman made many rifles during his 53 year career, from 1834 until 1887, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Although Leman made many styles of rifles, perhaps he is best known for his Indian Trade Rifles. This reproduction of Henry Leman's Indian Trade Rifle is stocked in maple, artificially hand striped exactly like the originals. Mixed furniture is quite common on original H. E. Leman rifles and this rifle is trimmed in brass furniture, with a iron buttplate. Ordered in both flint and percussion ignition, by the U. S. Government and many private firms, Leman rifles were the favorite of Indians across the frontier. "Of the 410 guns captured from the Sioux and Cheyenne in the final campaigns of 1877, 94 were Leman rifles." (Henry E. Leman - Riflemaker, by Charles E. Hanson, Jr., The Museum of the Fur Trade Quarterly, Volume 20, Number 4, Chadron, Nebraska, Winter 1984.) Hand made by noted contemporary builder George Nelson, and signed on the top flat of the barrel. Trigger reach is 13-1/2", weight is just over 8 pounds.

The nice quality .54 caliber 1" octagon by 32" barrel is cut rifled in with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 70" twist . Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The barrel is finished to a even smooth brown. The front sight is a barley corn brass blade, while the rear sight is dovetailed 8" ahead of the breech. The maker's signature G. B. Nelson is engraved on the top flat of the barrel.

Henry Leman striped his stocks artificially, hand painting the stripes with ink. This maple full stock is correctly hand striped and varnished. It appears as very highly figured maple when viewed from arms length. The stock is varnish finished to a satin sheen. The stock has a few small inspection marks stamped behind the triggerguard, and lock plate. A traditional iron buttplate is fitted, which is very common this style of rifle. The buttplate has a long pointed heel with a slight upward tip as found on antique examples. The buttstock is fitted with H. E. Leman's unique brass wilted lily capbox. The lid snaps open and closed smartly, under finger pressure, revealing a correctly hand bored cavity under the lid, exactly like the original. The triggerguard has a large open bow to access the single trigger, making this an ideal hunting rifle. When viewed from the top, the lock panels are slim and trim, and the wrist flows gracefully back to the tapered comb. The single tang bolt has a brown finish to match the barrel, and the screw slot is neatly aligned. A single domed head lock bolt retains the H. E. Leman percussion lock.

A short brass toeplate protects the critical toe, the toeplate screw has the slot neatly aligned with the barrel. The polished brass triggerguard is mounted with a steel dowel pins at front and rear. The forearm is very slender with a very correct oval shape as found on antique Leman rifles. The 7/16" diameter ramrod is fitted with a tapered iron ramrod tip with 10-32 thread for threaded accessories. The brass ramrod pipes and muzzle cap are decorated with traditional zig zag engraving on the ends. The cheek view shows the simple square raised cheek piece, with a single line molding. The sideplate inlay is inlet flush with the wood. The lock bolt has a domed head that correctly stands proud of the surface.

The lock plate and hammer are patterned from a antique Leman rifle. Internally this lock uses Ron Long designed Hawken lock internals. The lock has a strong mainspring and snappy action. The large drum is shaped with a square lug on the end. A hardened steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps is fitted. The single trigger is pinned high, to provide maximum leverage, and minimum trigger release pressure. Fine internal lock geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release.
