This percussion Missouri River Hawken half-stock rifle was built by Davide Pedersoli & Co, Italy. Stocked in walnut, trimmed in color case hardened iron furniture with a browned barrel. This rifle is used, with a few handling marks on the stock. The original sights have been replaced with a Lee Shaver tang sight, a globe front sight, and a spirit level fitted to the rear dovetail. The barrel has been bedded, and the hooked breech is permanently mounted to the tang to make it as rigid as possible for target shooting. Weight is 9.9 pounds. The rifle has a trigger reach of 13-3/4" making it well suited for today's average man size shooter.

The barrel measures 30" from the muzzle to the rear of the hooked breech and has a deep plum brown finish. The finish does have some bright marks on the top flat from the original long strap Hawken rear sight. The bore is rifled with six land lands and grooves in a fast twist for a conical ball. We suggest our Hornady Great Plains bullet #BALL-50-385. The bore is bright and appears to be bright and has been well maintained. The rifle has all the required Italian markings on the off flat near the breech, including serial number, caliber and various proofs. The Lee Shaver globe front sight has a post aperture installed. The rear sight dovetail has a spirit level fitted. The tang is fitted with a Lee Shaver tang sight with elevation and Soule style windage adjustment. The tang sight is fitted with hex driven screws, and would look much more approprate with slotted screws. The rifle includes: the original step adjustable rear sight and riser, nickel silver blade front sight, and three additional apertures for the front sight.

Stained a medium brown, the walnut stock is very straight grain. The stock has a few scattered dings in the buttstock. The late style Hawken crescent buttplate is color case hardened, as is the lock and other iron furniture. Ahead of the comb, the wrist is reinforced by the long tang of the hooked breech system. Two bolts engage the tang and pass through the stock to connect with the long triggerplate below, this system sandwiches the wrist and the resulting strength makes it very hard to break. A desirable feature for a mountain man in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, many days by horseback and keel-boat from Sam Hawken's gun shop in Saint Louis. Strength made the Hawken rifle famous! The forend is fitted with the color case hardened steel forend cap, and an iron ramrod entry pipe. The sturdy 10mm diameter brown ramrod, with brass tip is threaded to accept our 10-32 patch worm and ball puller, sold separately. The single lock bolt, and iron tear drop escutcheon, fitted flush with the side panel, are classic features of a half-stock Hawken plains rifle, from the 1835 - 1845 era.

This is a correct Hawken lock for this fur trade era percussion rifle, with a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and a fly detent to allow set triggers. The lock plate and hammer are color case hardened, in mottled colors. The breech is fitted with an 1/4-28 threaded hardened steel nipple. We suggest using a 1/4-28 threaded flush nipple when cleaning this rifle, since the barrel is not easily dismounted. Double lever double set triggers may be set, or the lock cocked, in any sequence. Triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
