The Model 1841 U.S. Percussion Rifle is also known as the "Mississippi Rifle" due to the use of the rifle by a Mississippi regiment under the command of Jefferson Davis during the Mexican War. It is estimated that nearly 70,000 of these rifles were produced by a combination of the Harpers Ferry arsenal and various contractors. Regarded by many as one of the most handsome of all percussion U.S. military longarms, this antique rifle is a Harpers Ferry 1846 production. The barrel has aged to a pitted textured brown-gray. The barrel has been shortened 1" from is original configuration. The brass has tarnished to dark patina from over 170 years of handling. Trigger reach is 13-1/2", and this rifle weighs 9.8 pounds.

The .54 caliber tapered round 32" barrel is rifled with seven lands and grooves. We note the barrel has been shortened from the original 33" length. The bore is dark with pitting running its entire length. The barrel exterior has aged to a pitted textured brown-gray patina. The barrel is fitted with a small brass blade front sight 1" behind the muzzle. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 2-1/4" ahead of the breech. The standard barrel and tang markings are no longer visible, due to the deep textured pitting of the barrel.

This 1841 U.S. Percussion Rifle is stocked in walnut and shows the handling marks and dings from over 170 years of age. There are no cracks or visible repairs in the stock. A portion of the left side of the forearm is missing under and extending back 6" from the front band. The initials J.M. and A.W.D. are carved into the left side of the buttstock. The brass patchbox is retained with three steel screws. The door can still be opened to reveal the deep cut cavity below. The stock is fitted with a brass buttplate with rounded comb. The top of the comb is stamped U.S. The flat end and simple comb shape are a common mid-19th century military fashion to simplify the fitting of this often difficult to fit part.

The toe is rounded in military fashion. The brass triggerguard is fitted with a swivel for a military style sling. A sling swivel is fitted to the front barrel band. We note the peg on the band spring that engages the hole on the front band is broken off and the band can easily be slid forward. The rear barrel band appears to be from a different Mississippi Rifle and does not sit fully back to clear the band spring. We also note a hole is drilled in the right side of the band that mimics the hole in the front band that the peg locks into, the rear band spring does not utilize a peg, so this hole is not original. The steel ramrod with flared brass tip is original to the gun. The ramrod has also been shortened 1" and the end re-threaded when the barrel was cut down. A long thin brass sideplate is inlet flush with the side panel with two lock bolts.

The lock has aged to a silvery-gray patina. The lock plate is marked with an Eagle over U.S. The tail is marked HARPERS FERRY 1846 in three lines. The lock has a strong mainspring and securely enters the half and full cock notches. The nipple appears to be original and has not been removed in a long time, we did not try to remove the nipple. The single trigger is pinned to provide a smooth release of the lock.
