This Lancaster County, Pennsylvania longrifle has the appearance of a late 18th century longrifle that was converted to percussion circa 1830. The rifle is stocked in plain maple and trimmed in limited brass furniture in "barn rifle" style. The straight octagon barrel and large Siler percussion lock have aged to a silvery-brown. This rifle is signed by contemporary builder Jack Garner on the top flat of the barrel. Trigger reach is 14-1/8" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 9.5 pounds.

The rifle is fitted with a 1" straight octagon .54 caliber barrel that is 35" long. The bore is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. We recommend our .530" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke brand bulk patching, cut at the muzzle. Lubricate with our Mink Oil patch grease, beef tallow, or animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy. The barrel has aged to a silvery-brown and has many light scratches from field use. The top barrel flat is signed J. Garner behind the rear sight. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech. A nickel silver front sight set in a brass base is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle.

This percussion longrifle has a nice wide brass buttplate in mid-18th century fashion. The wide buttplate will spread the felt recoil from this .54 caliber bore over a large area. The plain maple stock is stained to a honey maple color. The top view shows the straight tang of the breech plug. We note the wood is chipped slightly at the rear of the tang. The barrel is retained to the forestock with three pins. We note the stock is chipped out around the rear and front barrel retaining pins on the right side., the areas with missing wood have aged to a dark patina.

The bottom view reveals that no toe plate is fitted, instead the buttplate extends just past the toe to provide some protection to this fragile area of the stock. The triggerguard is retained by two dowel pins, as is traditional. A large brass inlay is nailed into the stock just ahead of the trigger guard. The forend is fitted with two plain brass ramrod pipes, no entry pipe is fitted. The black delrin ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 10-32 loading and cleaning jags. The ramrod extends 1" past the muzzle. No nose cap is installed to protect the end grain of the stock. The lock is secured with a single lock bolt without the use of a sideplate. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek to give a right hand shooter a comfortable place to align the sights.

Ignition is provided by a large Siler percussion lock. The lock is shaped with a long pointed tail with filed molding, styles used during the 1750 - 1780 flint lock era. Historically many longrifles were converted to percussion during the 1825 - 1845 era with a drum and nipple conversion. The drum is fitted with a 1/4-28 nipple. The R. E. Davis double lever double set triggers will fire from a set or unset position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

Assembled and signed by a well known contemporary builder, this .54 caliber rifle is stocked in plain maple and trimmed in brass furniture. The bore is bright and has been well maintained.
