Neatly assembled this 1840 - 1860 era Ohio halfstock rifle is unfired and ready to shoot. Assembled by contemporary maker George Nelson, this rifle has the slender lines of the rifles in the style of John and Caleb Vincent. Mr. Nelson noted that the stock has one cosmetic repair, from the triggerguard to the mid-point of the forearm. The hair-line grain separation developed during construction and was opened and filled. Hard to see, the repair can be seen when the rifle is rolled in the light. Trigger reach is 14" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 6.4 pounds.

The Orion barrel is 35" by 13/16" octagon. Cut rifled by the master barrel maker, Mr. Jerry Cunningham, it has eight equal lands and grooves, deep rifling, slow twist, for patched round balls. No longer made Orion barrels were well regarded during their period of operation. The .45 caliber bore is bright in as-new condition. The barrel is finished to a dark brown and fitted with a silver blade front sight and the flat top rear sight is dovetailed 8-1/2" ahead of the breech. The barrel is signed in block letters between the breech and rear sight, G. B. Nelson.

This rifle has captured the slim grace and feel of the original Vincent rifles. These were not thick or clumsy, but were simple and elegant. The buttstock is fitted with a deep crescent buttplate in Ohio fashion. The maple stock has been stained with Aquafortis to best reveal the stripes of the curly maple. The figure and the golden brown hue combine to make this rifle very appealing to the eye. A poured pewter cap protects the forend, exactly as on original Vincent rifles. The barrel is secured with a single pin mounted though a hand cut nickel silver escutcheon plate. When viewed from above the slim lines of this Vincent rifle come into view. The cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from your face, an ingenious feature found on better rifles. You may notice that the buttplate is not perfectly centered behind the tang. Rather, it is offset from the right hand shooter's cheek. This feature is called cast-off, and it places the right hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sight, making this gun instinctive to point and shoot.

This bottom view shows the square polished brass toeplate that protects the critical toe area during loading. Extra care has been taken to line up the screw slots with the barrel channel above. Note how the toeplate flat extends from the toe to the trigger, and fades through the lock panels to the rounded forend. The Ohio style triggerguard, made of polished brass, has a forward finger rest, under the bow, to assist your aim. The stock has a repair from the front of the triggerguard up into the forearm. The dark epoxy is visible if the rifles is rolled in the light. Three ramrod pipes retain the 5/16" diameter ramrod. Vincent rifles use this small ramrod, regardless of caliber. The brass ramrod entry pipe has octagon flats with ringed ends while the forward pipes are plain steel in traditional fashion. The sideplate is hand made in Vincent style with two small mounting screws securing it to the stock. A hand cut nickel silver hunter's star is fitted to the cheek piece.

The Goulcher family made thousands of locks. They are often found on Vincent rifles, as well as other plains rifles, late longrifles, pistols and shotguns of the 1840 to 1880 era. Notice the brass flash cup commonly found on original Vincent rifles, it has been installed to prevent flash spillage and damage to the metal and wood around the nipple. The double lever style double set triggers fire the lock, in the set or unset position. The lock may be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence.

In new, unfired, condition the rifle has no handling marks in the finish of the wood nor wear marks in the metal finish of the barrel. The brass furniture is polished bright and has not yet begun to acquire the patina of age. This handy .45 caliber rifle will make a great shooter and would be an excellent addition to any collection. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
