This Denver halfstock rifle was built by former GRRW member Gary White, and is an interpretation of what Sam Hawken might have built when he set up his shop for a short time in Denver, Colorado during the early 1860's after selling his St. Louis business to Gemmer. Assembled around a .50 caliber Colerain straight octagon barrel this plains rifle will be ideal for hunting or target shooting. This rifle features a bar action lock, hooked breech, and target sights. Weighing in at 9.9 pounds this halfstock rifle has a trigger reach of 13-5/8" making the gun well suited for today's average to taller shooter.

The heart of the rifle is a .50 caliber 32" long Colerain straight 1" wide octagon barrel. The bore is bright in as-new, unfired condition. The barrel is finished in a dark rust blue and the top flat is marked S. Hawken Denver just ahead of the rear sight. The left oblique flat is marked GRRW followed by a CA in a circle followed by H-25 and GBW near the breach. An adjustable flip-up long range style rear sight is screw mounted 4" ahead of the breech plug to a rail that is soldered to the top barrel flat extending 7-1/2" from the breech. A target post sight with shade hood is dovetailed 1-1/8" behind the muzzle. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling.

The curly maple stock is stained to a warm brown tone and finished with hand rubbed oil to best display the figure. The stock displays nice curl from the buttplate to the nose cap. The stock is in almost new condition, with only a few very minor handling marks. The top view shows the pointed tang of the short English style hooked breech. The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the key past the underlugs, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.

The brass toeplate protects the toe, ending in the traditional beaver tail finial. The long trigger bar is anchored by a bolt that passes through the tang, and a second bolt that passes through a brass oval inlay on the top of the wrist. This supports and re-enforces the wrist in the same way that a long tang would on a traditional style Hawken rifle. A brass scroll trigger guard is fitted to the long trigger bar. The forend is fitted with an brass forend cap, and ramrod entry pipe. The snugly fitted tapered wooden ramrod has an brass loading tip fitted on the hidden end. The exposed end has a brass tip threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The ramrod passes through two brass ramrod pipes that are soldered to the barrel's under rib. The single lock bolt passes through a small brass side plate. The beaver tail shaped cheek piece adds comfort for a right hand shooter, while aiming this .50 caliber rifle.

The L&R English bar lock and drip bar are finished to the same rust blue as the barrel. The English “bar" lock is so-called because it uses a “drip bar" soldered to the barrel, instead of wood above the lock plate. This improvement eliminates wood in this critical area ahead of the nipple, where constant over-spray might char it. The English Manton style breech plug is fitted with an iron 1/4-28 nipple for standard #11 percussion caps.

R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers. Turn the set screw, between the two triggers, inboard, until the rear trigger is disabled. After hunting, return the screw to its normal position, and adjust it to make your set trigger as strong or as feather light as you prefer, within the limits of safe use.

This rifle is brand new, in unfired condition. It is an interpretation of what Sam Hawken might have built when he briefly had a shop set up in Denver. The fur trade was winding down in Denver, but the local crowd still enjoyed hunting and target shooting. This rifle is the perfect fit for the modern shooter who wants to participate in those same activities. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
