This Tennessee style percussion longrifle is signed by contemporary maker Mr. John Simmons who apprenticed under Mr. John Bergmann. Both builders worked on this rifle and both have marked the bottom flat of the barrel along with the date, location, and number #002. All of these markings are out of sight, hidden by the stock, all that can be seen above is Mr. Simmons' signature on the top flat between breech and rear sight. Weighing in at 8.2 pounds the rifle has a trigger reach of 13-3/8" making the gun well suited for today's average size shooter.

The rifle is fitted with a L&R Durs Egg percussion conversion lock, typical of a rifle converted to percussion in the 1830 to 40 era. The rifle is stocked in lightly figured maple and has been trimmed in iron furniture as is proper on such a piece. A Green Mountain barrel forms the base of the gun, measuring 42" in overall length the barrel is 15/16" across the flats and is finished to a dark brown. The barrel is fitted with California style front and adjustable rear sight. The rifle is used with some handling marks on the stock and one check that has developed at the front of the decorative triggerplate finial. This cosmetic crack should not be any cause for concern.

The Green Mountain .54 caliber 42" barrel is 15/16" straight octagon. The .54 caliber bore is rifled with eight equal lands and grooves with a 1 in 70" twist for a tightly patched round ball. We recommend our .530" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke patching, lubricated with our Mink Oil tallow patch grease, if you require best accuracy. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The top flat of the barrel has been signed, J. Simmons, while the other markings have been hidden on the bottom flat. An elevation nd windage adjustable rear sight has been installed into a dovetail slot and sits 10" ahead of the breech, it is matched forward by a front sight positioned 1-3/4" behind the muzzle.

The rifle is stocked in lightly figured maple that has been stained a nice medium brown, to best reveal the figure found in the wood. The iron buttplate has a gentle curve to engage the shooter's shoulder. The slender wrist is fitted with a long “lollipop" style breech plug tang that angles down from the barrel. Two bolts pass through the tang and stock to engage the triggerplate below. One interesting feature of note is the forend “cap" that has been installed on the rifle. Instead of using an iron cap, to match the furniture, a horn cap or an ebony cap, Mr. Simmons has installed a long walnut cap. Darker than the maple it is clearly visible in the full length photograph of the rifle, nicely done this is a unique feature on this well made longrifle.

Three small screws hold the toeplate in position while two more screws engage the triggerguard ahead. At the very front of the triggerguard a decorative finial has been added, pinned into place the finial is the location of the previously mentioned crack, this small check in the stock extends about 5/8" forward from the end of the finial toward the skirt of the ramrod pipe. The wooden ramrod is held in place by three iron ramrod pipes, on skirted entry pipe and two plain round forward pipes. All three pipes have been finished to match the other furniture found on the rifle. A brass tip has been installed on the ramrod itself, the tip is threaded 8-32 to accept your loading and cleaning attachments. The side panel is fitted with a tear drop shaped sideplate. The buttstock is shaped with a small square cheek piece.

Ignition is provided by the L&R Durs Egg percussion conversion lock, which would be typical of a earlier flint rifle that was converted to percussion. The lock has been browned to match the barrel and iron furniture; it sits nicely against the backdrop of the maple stock. The lock plate has a distinctive English styling, correct for use on Southern rifles of this era. Tuned for best performance, this lock has fast time and will provide fast ignition.

The double lever double set trigger is correctly adjusted, to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. You may fire the lock with the triggers set, or unset, for target, or hunting. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

This percussion rifle is used with a few small handling marks. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted.
