This antique percussion infantry rifle is the U. S. Model 1863 Rifled Musket. Originally issued with armory bright steel, with three barrel bands securing the barrel to the stock. It was the one of the most common muskets of the Civil War. Manufactured by Springfield Armory with a 1864 date on the lock. The antique walnut stock is in good condition. It does appear to have been sanded long ago and has very faint cartouche marks. The bright finish has aged to a brown patina with scattered pitting. The bore on this musket is dark with visible rifling.

The .58 caliber barrel is 40" length including the breech plug snail. Originally finished bright the exposed surfaces have aged to a dark brown patina with a textured patina around the breech and on the lock from antique percussion caps. The V over P over eagle head proof marks are still visible but no date is legible. The .58 caliber bore on this musket is dark, but does have visible rifling. It has not been reamed out as many surplus muskets after the Civil War.

This original antique Civil War rifled .58 musket is stocked in black walnut. The stock has aged to dark patina, and appears to have been sanded long ago. The stock has scattered handling marks, dents, and dings with a series of circular dents on the left side of the buttstock. The sling swivels are mounted to the triggerguard and the middle barrel band. The front swivel rotates smoothly. The rear swivel is frozen. Our top view shows the steel buttplate, tapered round barrel, and octagon flats at the breech. The date on the breech is no longer visible in the brown patina. The rear sight is missing the leaf for long range shooting. The front sight is a steel blade on an integral base, that also serves as a bayonet lug.

Three steel barrel bands are snugly fitted, retained with band springs. The band springs can be depressed with finger pressure, and removed without tools. The band springs are correctly mounted with the open end of the "U" toward the muzzle. The bottom view reveals the rounded toe of the buttstock, steel triggerguard, and rear swivel for your military sling. Forward on this musket the steel ramrod is full length with the threads at the rear to accept period cleaning accessories.

The lock is still faintly lettered U. S. and SPRINGFIELD and faintly bears the date 1864 at the tail. The bolster of the barrel is stamped with an eagle, now mostly obliterated. The lock has a powerful mainspring and works crisply. The breech is fitted with an antique nipple. We do offer a stainless steel nipple to fit antique muskets. If you plan to fire the musket we would suggest using our #MOS-S stainless steel nipple and saving the antique steel nipple for display.

It will make a good display piece or could be used for reenactments as it is not so valuable or rare a model and does mechanically function. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
