This half-stock Hawken rifle was originally constructed from a kit by the now defunct Sharon Rifle Barrel Company. The rifle is assembled on a piece of maple that has been stained very dark, trimmed in browned iron furniture, and fitted with a silver forend cap. The .54 caliber Sharon barrel is bright and has been well maintained. Trigger reach is 13-1/2" and the weight of the rifle is 9.7 pounds.

The .54 caliber straight octagon barrel measures 32" in overall length and the barrel is 1" across from flat to flat. The barrel is finished a light brown with bright spots around the edges from years of use and cleaning. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Cut rifled, this barrel is American made with eight equal lands and grooves, with slow rifling twist, for patched round ball. An iron blade front sight is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. A long adjustable rear sight with tall buckhorns is dovetailed and sits 8-1/2" ahead of the breech. The top of the barrel is marked Sharon Rifle Barrel Co. .54 Cal.

Stocked in a piece of maple, the wood has been stained to a very dark brown. The stock has many dings and pressure dents from field use. We note there are gaps in the inletting. Wood has been used to fill large gaps around the rear of the tang, and at both the front and rear of the trigger plate. The shaping of the stock also has some extra bulk. The buttplate has a modest curve to engage the shoulder in mid 19th century style. The iron furniture is finished to a textured dark brown. The triggerguard is a late Hawken design with a wide bow for the double set triggers and offset curled grip rail. The screw that holds the rear of the trigger guard to the plate is loose, making the rear of the guard wiggle up and down.

The wrist is dominated by the long tang that hooks into the breech plug. The tang is held in place by two bolts that pass through the stock to engage the triggerplate below. This has the effect of sandwiching the wrist and adding and extra level of reinforcement. This extra strength is what made these rifles so popular on the Great Plains and in the Rocky Mountains, a hard fall would leave the rifle undamaged whereas other guns would easily break through the wrist. The hooked breech allows for easy cleaning, remove the ramrod and two wedge keys, and the barrel easily lifts out of the stock. Further back on the rifle is the classic beaver tail style cheek that helps to angle the recoil of this large caliber rifle away from the shooters face, while providing a comfortable platform from which to align the sights.

Our bottom view of the rifle shows off the long iron toeplate and trigger bar. The toeplate of the rifle is held in position by two screws and protects the delicate toe of the rifle from damage incured while loading and cleaning. We note this is a slight crack on the left side of the stock in the tip of the toe. The end of the forearm is fitted with a poured silver nose cap. The ramrod passes through a browned entry pipe. Two ramrod pipes are installed on the barrel rib. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass tips to accept 8-32 loading and cleaning accessories. We note the brass tip has worn through, exposing the wood underneath.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this L&R percussion lock. This lock has the old style L&R internals. Should it every require replacement of a part, all the internals must be replaced with the L&R upgrade kit. Do not mix old style and new style lock parts. The mid 1800's style lock is browned to match the barrel and furniture. The brown finish shows a few handling marks in the finish from use. The lock is properly tuned to provide fast lock time and positive action. A single lock bolt passes through a late Hawken sideplate to engage the lock on the opposite side.

Below the lock a set of L&R double lever, double set Hawken triggers are installed on the rifle. Properly tuned and adjusted the triggers can be set and fired in any sequence. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
