This halfstock Hawken rifle is stocked in curly maple, trimmed in traditional iron furniture, with a Ron Long designed percussion lock and triggers. This large bore Hawken rifle would be ideal for your late fur trade impression. This percussion rifle was created from Track's best Jim Bridger's Hawken rifle parts, by contemporary maker J.D. Belcher. Trigger reach is 14" to fit todays average to taller shooter. This halfstock Plains Rifle weighs 10.2 pounds, and is very well balanced, due to the straight tapered barrel.

The 36" Colerain .58 caliber barrel is straight tapered 1-1/8" octagon at the breech, 1" at the muzzle, to improve the balance. It feels lighter than it actually is, while sighting, due to the lighter muzzle end. The .54 caliber bore is cut rifled with six equal lands and deep grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for patched round ball. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six round bottom grooves. Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. The off flat is hand engraved Cal .58 in script. The octagon barrel, lock, and iron furniture are all finished in a smooth dark blue. The semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 10-1/4" ahead of the breech. The front sight, a nickel silver blade with copper base, is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle.

This traditional Hawken rifle is stocked in fancy maple stained to an attractive medium brown. The barrel, and iron furniture are all finished to a smooth matte blue, to reduce glare and mirage. The buttplate has a modest curve to engage the shooter's shoulder in mid 19th century fashion. The long iron beaver tail tang of the hooked breech strengthens the wrist. The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the keys past the underlugs, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by a oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.

The beautiful striped figure is visible from the bottom from the toe up through the forend of the rifle. The traditional iron toeplate protects the toe, ending a beaver tail finial, a theme on the Hawken rifle. The long trigger bar, anchored to the long tang with two tang bolts, supports and reinforce the wrist. A strong wrist was a desirable feature for a rifle in the mid 1800's while in the Rocky Mountains, many days by horseback and keel boat from Sam Hawken's gun shop in Saint Louis. The lock panels taper widest at the front is late percussion fashion. The forend is fitted with iron forend cap and ramrod entry pipe. The tapered ramrod is stained to a warm brown, with a brass tip threaded to accept your 10-32 threaded cleaning jag or patch worm. The beaver tail shaped cheek piece adds comfort for a right hand shooter, while aiming this big bore rifle. The single lock bolt, and tear drop escutcheon around it, are classic features of a halfstock Hawken plains rifle, from the 1835 - 1845 era. Two keys retain the barrel.

Ron Long, of Denver, recreated this T. Gibbons Hawken percussion lock, for the now defunct Green River Rifle Works. Skillfully assembled and tuned by R. E. Davis, this is the correct Hawken lock for this fur trade era percussion rifle. Polished inside, the well tempered parts include a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and a fly detent to allow set triggers. The lock has been heated blued to a faux color case hardened appearance.

The double lever double set triggers will currently only fire from the set position, and require setting the trigger before cocking the lock. The rear trigger requires some additional backlash adjustment. The rear trigger is currenlty holding the sear up out of the halfcock, or full cock position unless it is set first. The top of the rear trigger needs to be filed very slightly to give it some additional clearance. Holding the rear trigger back even slightly will allow the lock to engage both the half cock and full cock position correctly, so it is very close.
