This Hopkins and Allen rifle is a replica of a clever Underhammer Rifle, most often made in New York or New England. The barrel and action are finished to a deep blue. The brass ramrod pipes have aged to mellow patina. The maple stock has a few handling marks from use. Stocked with a 13-7/8" trigger reach, this rifle should fit todays average shooter well. This rifle weighs 8.1 pounds.

This underhammer rifle has a 31" octagon barrel, marked Hopkins & Allen Arms on the top flat. The .45 caliber barrel is rifled in a slow twist for patched round balls. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. We recommend our Hornady .440" round ball, Ox-Yoke .015" bulk patching cut at the muzzle, lubricated with our Mink-Oil tallow patch lubricant. The rear sight is a semi-buckhorn dovetailed 7" ahead of the breech. A Lyman No. 17 front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle.

Underhammer rifles are a correct style from this 1830 - 1850 period. Stocked in plain straight grain maple the buttstock is fitted with a brass buttplate. Notice the curved trigger, which has excellent trigger geometry, and smooth trigger release. The large trigger bow acts as the mainspring for the hammer. This ingenious action is very simple, with few moving parts, typical of Yankee Ingenuity from this period. The hammer strikes the nipple, providing direct ignition into the powder chamber with no turns. This underhammer rifle requires a 1/4-32 nipple, our part number #RNA-S. The nipple is surrounded by a brass flash cup to direct the cap spray away from the barrel.

The maple forend has the relatively flat sides typical of the Hopkins & Allen underhammer replicas, rather than coming to a feathered edge against the barrel. A 3/8" ramrod, with 10-32 threaded brass tip is carried in the brass ramrod pipe mounted under the barrel. Shaped without a cheek piece this rifle is equally suited to a right or left hand shooter.

Used, the stock has some small handling marks, the blue finish displays some minor wear. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
