This percussion target rifle was inspired by an antique example owned by Sanford Bascom of New Hampshire, who served as a Union sniper from 1861 until discharged in 1864. A 2011 Muzzle Blast article notes that Mr. Bascom was a frugal man with a target rifle with a full length telescope, an unusual feature of that period. After competing and being selected for service as a sharpshooter, he was involved in the battles of Great Bethal, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.

This heavy barreled target rifle is stocked in black walnut and trimmed in brass furniture. The L&R back action lock is mated to a patent style breech fitted to a Green Mountain tapered octagon barrel. The barrel is fitted with a 34" long Lyman Century telescope with a 4x magnification. The barrel is signed No. 75 S.R. Blackstone on the top flat. The rifle has a few small handling marks on the stock and metal finish. Trigger reach is 14-1/2" for a larger or taller shooter. Weight is 18.9 pounds, making it ideal to shoot from a rest.

The .45 caliber Green Mountain No 6 tapered octagon barrel is rifled with a 1 in 18 " fast twist for a conical bullet. The bore measures .450" diameter with .458" diameter grooves. The bore is bright and appears to have been well maintained. The barrel is finished to a dark brown and does have two tapped holes at 9 and 9-1/2" ahead of the breech with small filler screws installed. The previous owner reported good results with a 500 grain paper patched bullet over 80 grains of 2Fg Goex black powder.

The rifle is fitted with a large Schuetzen style brass buttplate that fully engages the shooter's shoulder. The black walnut stock displays figure from the toe up through the comb and is finished to a satin sheen. The buttstock is shaped without a cheek piece. The action has a long browned steel tang that helps to reinforce the wrist. The rifle is fitted with a triggerguard with a large bow and curled grip rail for maximum comfort. All of the brass furniture has a mellow hand burnished appearance. Designed as a target, or bench rifle the forend of the stock has no provisions for a ramrod. We would recommend one of our sturdy creedmoor ramrods for loading and cleaning.

The rifle is fitted with a L&R back action percussion lock. The back action denotes that the mainspring is behind the hammer, and this design of lock was popular on bench rifles and target guns of the mid 19th century. The lock is fitted to a custom breech with a snail shaped bolster with a high flash fence to protect the breech from repeated cap flash. The single trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear and a crisp release.

The browned steel action is neatly fitted to the buttstock. The single lock bolt is mounted through a mid 19th century influenced New England style brass sideplate. The black walnut buttstock displays attractive figure from the toe to the comb. Although this rifle is designed for a right hand shooter, it is nearly symmetrical and could be used by a left hand shooter. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted.
