This handy percussion Jaeger rifle was constructed and is signed by the late contemporary gun builder Don Kammerer. Stocked in walnut the rifle is trimmed with burnished brass furniture, all of which has aged to a mellow patina. This rifle is used with some marks on the stock, wear in the brown finish, and pitting in the bore.

The .54 caliber Getz swamped octagon barrel is 31" length, cut rifled with seven deep radius grooves and a slow twist for use with a patched round ball. Radius groove rifling eliminates the square inside corner that accumulates fouling , making the bore much easier to clean. Either through storage in humid area or improper cleaning the bore on this rifle is no longer perfect. All the rifling grooves display pitting from about 2" to 6" behind the muzzle.

The barrel has a hand engraved border at the end of the breech. The top flat is hand engraved Don Kammerer in Gothic script. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 9-1/4" ahead of the breech. The rear sight is shaped with a feather finial. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with a brass base. This front sight is a latter addition to the rifle, and is currently fitted backwards. Installation of this sight has scuffed the brown finish on the barrel. A Don Kammerer "Bright and Clear" front sight is included with the mounting instructions. This sight has a steel base with a translucent orange blade to collect light.

Weighing just 7.8 pounds the rifle has a trigger reach of 14" and is well suited for today's average size shooter.
The walnut stock has a warm brown tone. Well finished, the stock has a few small handling marks, from normal use. This rifle has classic Germanic jaeger rifle architecture with the buttstock fitted with a wide, tall, nearly flat buttplate. The stock has a well defined step at the end of the wrist. The brass triggerguard has a long open bow.
Our top view of the Jaeger shows the wide buttplate and buttstock, which shooters will appreciate when firing full loads in this short barreled rifle. The cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from your face, an ingenious feature found on better rifles. The wrist is fitted with a oval thumbpiece engraved with the initials DBK.

Lock panels taper widest at the rear in early muzzleloading rifle fashion. The straight tang is neatly inlet into the top flat of the barrel and secured with a tang bolt. The tang has been expertly hand engraved with a decorative border. The tang bolt is also hand engraved and fitted with the slots aligned with the barrel.
From below the wide bottom flat of the stock can be seen tapering forward toward the triggerguard. No toeplate has been installed on the rifle leaving that section of the stock unprotected. The buttplate does stand just proud of the bottom of the stock, providing a small measure of protection to this area.

The brass triggerguard of the rifle has been pinned into position. The triggerguard has leaf shaped finials and is hand engraved with a decorative border on the bow.

Out of the picture the ramrod is held in place by three brass ramrod pipes, one entry, two forward. The tapered wooden rod has a brass tip with no threads for accessories. This rifle also includes a tapered aluminum ramrod with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories.
Ignition for this Jaeger rifle is provided by this large Siler percussion lock. Finished to match the barrel the lock stands out neatly against the lighter background of the walnut stock. Properly tuned and assembled the lock has good internals and a hefty mainspring, ensuring quick and reliable lock times. The single trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear.
Our final look at the rifle shows off the large oval cheek of the Jaeger rifle as well as the brass sideplate. The sideplate is engaged by two hand engraved lock bolts that pass through the stock to engage the lock on the opposite side.
