This antique pistol is unmarked as to a maker. Stocked in European walnut with some raised carving and trimmed in brass furniture, the brass trim is decorated with some attractive hand engraving. The lock, stock, and barrel have patina and handling marks typical of a 200+ year old pistol. The grip has been repaired and does have a dark line of epoxy visible across the grip on both sides.
The 8" tapered octagon-to-round barrel is .56 caliber smoothbore. The bore has scattered pitting visible. No front or rear sight was fitted, typical of a military style pistol designed to be used at close range. The bird's head grip is fitted with a brass butt cap that extends to the midpoint of the grip. The buttcap has a engraved border and designs around the mounting screws. The lower mounting screw is a modern replacement. The lock panels are framed with a raised molding. The tang is surrounded by a raised chip carved design of a flowering Flur de Lys. Lock panels gently taper widest at the rear following the taper of the octagon-to-round barrel. The round faced lock has aged to a speckled gray brown patina. The lock has a English style with a rounded pan with pan bridle, and rounded flint cock. The frizzen spring has a roller, a feature found on later 18th to early 19th century flintlocks. The triggerguard is shaped with a wide bow with raised boss and acorn finial. The ramrod pipes have double rings on the ends with a tapered skirt on the entry pipe. The tapered ramrod is fitted with a flared brass tip. The sideplate has sweeping curves and a pointed tail. The sideplate has decorative moldings as well as hand engraved designs.
