This Kentucky pistol is stocked in curly maple, stained to a light brown with golden undertones. The pistol is trimmed in a very limited amount of iron furniture, similar to a schimmel or "barn" rifle. The straight octagon Green Mountain barrel and the L&R John Bailes flintlock are finished to dark brown. This pistol is as-new and has been fired to align the sights, by contemporary maker L. Dawson
The 10" straight octagon Green Mountain barrel has been draw filed smooth and finished to a dark brown. The .50 caliber bore is mirror bright, cut rifled with a fast twist ideal for a patched round ball. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The barrel is fitted with small brass blade front sight, and a flat top rear sight fitted 2" ahead of the breech.
Finished to match the barrel, the L&R John Bailes flintlock has a crisp action and a well hardened frizzen. When using our best 5/8" knapped English gun flints, #FLINT-ENG-5
, the lock will throw a shower of sparks into the pan. A direct drilled vent hole is well centered, positioned at the mid point between the bottom and top edge of the pan.
Viewed from above the breech end of the barrel is fitted with a flared tang. A single tang bolt is threaded into rectangular nut that acts as a partial trigger plate. The forearm of the stock is shaped with graceful slender proportions.
The hand forged triggerguard is a very basic bow design and is secured to the stock with two screws. A single formed sheet iron ramrod pipe secures the 5/16" diameter ramrod to the stock. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 10-32 brass threads.
Two lock bolts secure the L&R John Bailes flintlock. The lock bolts are finished to a dark brown, matching the other steel furniture. This pistol has a simple primitive 18th century styling. It will be a delight to carry at the rendezvous, an historical event, or as a trusted companion when trekking through the woods.
