This French Fusil is stocked in walnut, correctly oil finished, this fullstock has an even reddish-brown color, that contrasts nicely with the patina finished bright steel furniture The buttplate, triggerguard, sideplate, and lock feature cast-in engraving. This fusil has a slightly aged patina finish and would be perfect for the French reenactor. The 20 gauge smoothbore is bright and has been well maintained. Weighing in at 8.0 pounds the fusil has a trigger reach of 14” making it well suited for today’s larger size shooter.

The 20 gauge octagon-to-round barrel is 44" in length. The octagon section is 11-1/2" in length transitioning to 16 flats with a wedding band. The .619" bore is bright and clean, well maintained. A small silver fusil front sight is soldered on the barrel 3-1/2" from the muzzle. No rear sight is fitted to the barrel. This smoothbore gun will qualify for the new N.M.L.R.A. Trade Gun Match, where you fire patched round balls at paper targets, and shot at clay birds, using the same flint smoothbore gun. The barrel was originally polished bright, it has started to develop a dull gray-brown patina from handling. The left oblique flat is stamped with French proof marks, a nice historical touch. The tip of the thumbnail tang is also stamped with a proof mark.

The sweeping architecture of the French fusil buttstock is quite comfortable to shoot. The walnut stock has a few scattered handling marks from use. The wide flat buttplate is an advantage, since it reduces the recoil you will feel when firing full loads. The long comb of the buttplate features cast-in engraving. The width of the early buttplate is shown, revealing how the baluster wrist tapers from the lock panels, widest at the buttplate. The tang is surrounded with raised carving and a single tang bolt passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. Four small steel pins retain the barrel to the forearm.

The iron triggerguard is mounted with pins, and the bow features engraving in a floral pattern. The long decorative front finial of the triggerguard is surrounded with raised carving. Out of the picture three iron ramrod pipes retain the wooden ramrod, along with a matching entry pipe with pointed skirt. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a bone loading tip. No threaded tips are provided for cleaning or loading accessories. The polished iron sideplate is inlet 2/3 into the walnut stock. The sideplate features cast-in engraving that matches the engraving found on the rest of the gun. The two large dome head lock bolts are stamped with small proof marks.

The French fusil flint lock is best quality, finished to match the barrel, and has also developed a gray-brown patina. The lock plate and cock are decorated with cast-in engraving. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock. The direct drilled touch hole is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
