This classic smoothbore gun has the sweeping architecture of Bucks County, and was interpreted from a rifle by John Shular shown in Rifles of Colonial America, Volume 1 by Dr. George Shumway. Shaped from a blank the curly maple stock has a hand scraped finish. The reddish cherry color is very typical of rifles from the Bucks County region. The Rice Barrel Company octagon-to-round smoothbore barrel is finished to a dark brown. The Jim Chambers Dale Johnson flintlock has a classic 18th century appearance and is finished a patina gray. Hand made by contemporary builder Brian Staley. This fowler has a 13-3/4" trigger reach, which should fit today's average size shooter well. It weighs a modest 6.6 pounds.

The 20 gauge 42" octagon-to-round barrel by Rice Barrel Company is octagon for 13" at the breech with a wedding band transition to round. The barrel is finished to a smooth dark brown. A silver blade front sight is soldered just behind the muzzle. A regionally correct low flat top rear sight dovetailed 10-1/2" ahead of the breech. This smoothbore allows shooting lead or bismuth shot with traditional wads and cards, or use patched round balls for larger game.

Stocked in curly maple, stained to a dark cherry red color, that nicely displays the contrasting figure across the stock. The stock has a hand scraped finish, you can see visible marks as the fowler is rolled in the light. The large brass buttplate is wide and flat to spread the recoil over a large area. The pointed thumbnail flared tang plug sits above the lock panels. The wrist is fitted with a large heart shaped silver wrist inlay. The bottom view shows the unadorned toe of the rifle. The triggerguard is pinned in position, and finished to hand burnished appearance with a light patina. The ramrod entry pipe is formed from sheet brass with flats on the body, small engraved rings at the end and the large Fluer de Lys style regionally correct skirt. The ramrod is fitted with a flared brass tip for seating card and wads, it has no provisions for threaded accessories. The muzzle end of the stock is fitted with a brass muzzle cap to protect the end grain of the stock. The barrel lug pins and ramrod pipe pins all extend past the surface of the wood and can be felt when running your hand across the stock. A brass sideplate with ball end tail support the two domed head lock bolts that secure the lock to the stock.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by a Jim Chamber's Dale Johnson flintlock. The Dale Johnson flintlock is based on large Siler lock internals, but features a 1/8" drop in the tail and a banana base line curvature reminiscent of the Transition period. This lock captures the styling used on many American longrifles. Most flint locks were imported from England or Europe, for use by American gunmakers. The lock plate stands slightly above the wood panel, and is chamfered along each edge, creating the shadow line around the lock plate. We recommend our #FLINT-ENG-6 for best performance in this rifle. The lock is finished to silvery brown patina. A forged iron early curled trigger is fitted to this rifle. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release. Ignition is provided through a steel vent hole liner that has been finished to blend in with the barrel. The liner well positioned, above the bottom of the pan and centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

The flint lock shows only a few marks from sparking. The bore is bright and ready to shoot. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
