This antique fowler appears to have been made in the first quarter of the 19th century to compete in the hardware store market. The architecture and decoration of this Liege Belgium made fowler appears to have been heavily influenced by the trade muskets produced for Ketland & Co. The walnut stock has a splice in the forend, original to the construction. We have noted this "pieced stock" on Ketland made guns as well, and some books have historical references to this construction technique, which was unpopular with end users. The brass trim features light engraving. Trigger reach is 13", about average for many antique fowlers. Weight is 7.2 pounds.

This full stock smoothbore features a 41" tapered octagon-to-round barrel. The 14" tapered octagon breech has a single wedding band The barrel's 16 gauge smooth bore measures .655" diameter at the muzzle, the bore is dark with pitting over the full length. The barrel has a "L" shaped iron front sight mounted behind the muzzle, no rear sight is fitted in fowling gun fashion. The breech end of the barrel is stamped with the circle ELG over star post-1810 Liege, Belgium proof mark. The left flat of the barrel has some visible vise marks just above the line of the stock.

Stocked in straight grain European walnut the stock has aged to a dark appearance. The stock has some scattered handling marks, dents, and dings. This stock is "pieced" or spliced about 14" ahead of the breech. This chevron shaped joint was unpopular with end users when they would become visible during use. As this fowler has aged the forearm and buttstock have aged to different colors. The comfortable flat buttplate is tastefully engraved with a potted plant design. The wrist is decorated with a fine line checkering, which displays some wear from use. The lock panels taper widest to the rear in early flint long gun fashion. The barrel tang is engraved with a feather design and border. The off flat of the breech is stamped with post-1810 era Belgian proof mark.

The tapered lock panels, engraved brass triggerguard, and rounded toe are visible in the bottom view. The triggerguard has a pineapple style finial and the triggerguard bow is engraved with a snowflake design. The forged iron tapered ramrod appears to be original to this fowler. The muzzle is fitted with a dark piece of ebony. The side panel has very simple washer style sideplates inlet flush to support the two lock bolts.

The reconverted flintlock is shaped to appear as a Ketland style flintlock. The cock assembly, pan, frizzen, and frizzen spring are all well executed replacement parts. This lock does not have a exterior pan bridle or a bridle on the tumbler and sear to simplify construction. Internally the lock has small assembly hash marks on major parts to assure the same parts went back on the same lock from a batch. The tail of the lock is hand engraved with a feather design. The finish on the lock has a speckled gray brown patina, as does the area around the vent in the barrel. The area on the vent has a very faint line visible where it was plugged to reconvert it back to flintlock. The lock sparks very well.
